RBBQ Class RBL-5 77171
Description:
RBBQ Class RBL-5 77171 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in September 1981, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This car was stenciled: WHEN EMPTY RETURN TO AGENT CB&Q RR ROCHELLE, ILL. This was one of 150 cars built during July and August 1967 by the CB&Q shops in Havelock, Nebraska, road numbers 77100 - 77249. The differed from the previous batch of RBL class cars in the improved door handle on the Camel plug door, and the lack of roofwalks and full height ladders to reach the roof. The ICC banned the roofwalk and associated ladders on new cars built after January 1, 1967. As a result, the new cars' handbrakes were also positioned low on the end of the car. The herald was also positioned slightly different between the two series of cars.

RBBQ 78052
Description:
RBBQ 78052 at Clyde, Illinois on an unknown day in May 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The following is from Burlington Bulletin No. 12, REEFERS, edited by Hol Wagner: All insulated boxcars produced after 1963 were both owned and operated by either the CB&Q or the C&S. Cars built after 1963 carried RBBQ or RBCS reporting marks and were lettered BURLINGTON in the yellow band rather than BURLINGTON REFRIGERATOR EXPRESS. RBBQ 78000 - 78299 were turned out by Havelock ( CB&Q shops in Nebraska ) between November 1964 and September 1965. These cars took full advantage of the efficiency and light weight of urethane foam insulation; they were 60 feet long inside and had a capacity of 155,000 pounds. And because the foam was so efficient, thinner sidewalls were possible, so all the RBL's ( and mechanical reefers ) built at Havelock after mid-1963 were outside braced. All 300 had cushion underframes - National 3-C gliding sills for the first 290 cars and Miner M-20 hydraulic cushion underframes for the last 10. Only these last 10 cars, 78290 - 78299, carried HYDRAULIC CUSHIONING lettering on the yellow band; the other 290 cars had no lettering in this space. The last 10 also featured a different style plug door than the other cars. Interestingly though, all 300 cars had the same load-securing equipment inside: Equipco one- and two-piece load dividers, Evans six-position side fillers, and Landreth liner panels on ends, doors, ceiling, and portions of the sides. Cars 78000 - 78099 were assigned to Coors beer service, and the beginning of a massive shift back to rail transport by one of the nation's largest brewers was under way.

RBBQ 79839
Description:
RBBQ 79839 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in May 1981, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The following is excerpted from Burlington Bulletin No. 12, REEFERS, edited by Hol Wagner: While the CB&Q shops in Havelock, Nebraska were building 300 60-foot insulated boxcars ( 78000 - 78299 number series ) during 1964-65, the shops also built 100 similar 50-foor cars, numbered RBBQ 79800 - 79899. These cars, turned out in January and February 1965, had Keystone cushion underframes ( and HYDRAULIC CUSHIONING lettering ), ASF ride control trucks, and Ellcon load dividers, Evans six-position side fillers, and laminated wood floors. Like the RBBX series 79550 - 79799, these cars had their 10-foot wide plug door positioned slightly off-center to the right on each side. The wide, off-center door, coupled with the comparatively short length of the car, and the fact that the door opened to the shorter end of the car, led to an unusual feature on these cars; the door stop had to be positioned right in the lower center of the Burlington Route herald.

Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad gondola Class GM-4A 83084 at the Eola Reclamation Plant on October 11, 1964, photo by Chuck Zeiler. The CB&Q had 590 class GM-4A gondolas (#'s 82550-83139) built in 1957 at the Havelock, Nebraska shops. This one contains the cab of Rock Island's E8 656, the lead unit on the detouring combined Corn Belt Rocket and the Golden State (Train #'s 4 and 10), which was hit by CB&Q's Train #3, mistakenly routed into the standing Rock Island train at Mongomery, Illinois on September 27, 1964. Marty Bernard's recollection of the incident is (at of the time of this post) at this address: http://railfan44.blogspot.com/2014/01/major-passenger-train-wreck-montgomery.html

This car was built by CB&Q's Havelock (Nebraska) shops in 1958, one of 590 cars in the 82550-83139 number series, eventually becoming BN 560000-560349 series. However, in 1959, the Q took 25 of the 1958-built GM-4A's and rebuilt them by raising the sides 14 inches (note rivet line above the word BURLINGTON) and added removable roofs, bulkheads, and wood floors. The rebuilt cars kept their original numbers but were reclassed GM-4C and had an increased capacity of 2259 cubic feet. This car is listed in the January 1969 Official Railway Equipment Register (ORER) under Note R which reads: Individual numbers of cars in series 82340 to 82345 and 82356 to 83139 that are specially equipped with removable 'Sectional Roofs' and differ in A.A.R. Description:

The car appears to be loaded with the roofs that it was once equipped with. In 1959 the Burlington rebuilt 25 GM-4A gondolas with higher sides and sectional removable roofs. These proved popular with shippers, so the Q continued to add covered gondolas to the roster. Number 83347 was one of 100 cars (#'s 83300-83399) built by Havelock in 1965 so equipped.

CB&Q 83667
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 83667 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in January 1981, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in 1962 by CB&Q's Haveock, Nebraska shops, this car is wearing the pre-merger green paint which replaced the original Chinese Red paint, indicating the car was probably shopped for repairs around 1969. What appears to be dirt in the sky in the upper right of the photo are pigeons (locally known as flying rats) that have been rousted from their lunch. As grain cars rolled down the hump, they would sometimes spill some of their contents when they coupled with standing cars. This provided free lunch service for the birds until the next rolling car made contact with the standing cars causing the birds to become airborne circle around and land back at the lunch counter.
