Title:  Autos arriving
Description:  An auto rack train arrives at Kansas City on the ex Wabash. We have a "family portrait" of NS power here, one unit in NS and one each of the predecessors. The SD45 is not long for the world at this point, nor are the open racks. I had seen the second unit before-on the Southern at Greensboro in 1980.

Coal with N&W and SOU power
Title:  Coal with N&W and SOU power
Description:  A coal train bound for the Norfolk pier has three units-including a GP 35 of all things-and 223 cars. NS would take coal trains out of the mining districts, run them to Crewe, and combine them into monster loaded trains for the pier. Im told they ran 300 car empty trains back to Crewe, but did not see one.

Headed west on the ex NKP
Title:  Headed west on the ex NKP
Description:  I didnt get to Buffalo much-living in NY City, it was 420 miles just to get there, a little out of reach for having one day off a week-so I did not get to see the action there or west. It was something of a novelty to see a train I had seen in Binghamton, now on the western leg of its journey. Heres AFOB, the Ayer Mass to Bellevue train, getting out of town for a run over the ex NKP to Ohio. It will be a quick trip. This shot also gives a good overview of the industrial part of the city, with grain elevators all along the lake front south of the city, demonstrating Buffalo's prominence as a grain milling center. The huge elevator taking up much of the right background was built by Continental Grain, and was the largest in the world at the time it was built. Continental was notable for being the biggest shipper on the NYC. The girder bridge just beyond the signals was the DLW City Branch, to its Buffalo passenger station. The open drawbridge in the distance is the ex NKP; the NS train will use the adjacent ex Buffalo Creek bridge, which was once owned owned jointly by the Erie and LV.

Eastbound GEs
Title:  Eastbound GEs
Description:  This eastbound behind a pair of new GEs was rolling 160 cars through Fort Wayne. The flat land the NKP ran through in the upper midwest really lent itself to long trains, and NS was not shy about running some moster consists. These two units are just starting from the signal, and their exhaust is shooting straight up. Once up to speed, it will be an easy ride.

Strasburg power
Title:  Strasburg power
Description:  The power that was on the Strasburg Local that day is now back in Manassas, tied up for tomorrows activity. Note the type B trucks under the GP 35's, the result of being used from trade in Alcos. For those of you who remember when MTV used to actually run music videos, youll recall Steve Winwood had a song out in the early 80s called "Back In the High Life Again" that featured a Southern Railway train switching. This was the train, the rail sequences shot here in Manassas.

New scheme northbound
Title:  New scheme northbound
Description:  Well, it wasnt that new, but there were still a lot of units in their predecessor paint-note the second unit. I saw quite a few of those on that trip. This train is a monster, six cars of TOFC.

Lite power
Title:  Lite power
Description:  A set of lite power rolls through AF on its way south with a relatively rare bird leading-a hi hood GE. Southern and NW got them, just as they did with everything else. But overall, there were a lot fewer GE's than EMD's built this way.

Common signal then
Title:  Common signal then
Description:  Hard to find now. The local power sits adjacent to the main, which is protected by one of NWs classic position light signals.
