Title:  Old and older
Description:  A southbound oil train led by a KCSM GE in the old gray paint rolls past the displayed F 7 in the older Belle scheme as it passes the Decatur station. The oil train had a real NAFTA consist: a KCSM leader, KCS US unit, an ex TFM unit now in KCS colors, and a pair of CP units for DPU's.

Old power, new life
Title:  Old power, new life
Description:  Once a princess, now a hard working old girl, this former Santa Fe Warbonnet SD 75I is now part of the PRLX lease fleet. A number of these units have turned up on KCS lately, mostly in bulk commodity service. I remember when these were the queens of the high iron, rolling big fast trains across the Transcon. Hard to believe that was over 20 years ago. Theyre still on the main, just not making the 70 MPH they used to, a testament to the longevity of EMDs engineering. This was on a northbound at CP Flint Creek, just picked up from its duty as a DPU on an AEPX coal train, now in the plant.

Title:  Shot it anyway
Description:  By the time I got down to Dorsey, the light was below the hill, but I heard this 80 car northbound empty grain train blowing for Mt Olive Rd. I put the camera on the sports setting and took the photo anyway. Not too bad, considering. Im looking forward to the longer days of summer, when its light at 6 PM.

Wide view, lots of power
Title:  Wide view, lots of power
Description:  Sometimes KCS will run extra units on an empty train to balance the power used as DPUs, since they tend to accumulate in Heavener after a run down from Pittsburg, as theyre not really needed for northbounds. Thus, this empty AEPX train has seven units up front, and a BNSF Grinstein SD 70MAC on the rear just for good measure.

Title:  Ten minutes too late
Description:  I had gone up to Gentry to drop off some food at my sons hluse, and saw a headlight as I crossed the tracks in town. Old switch stand
Title:  Old switch stand
Description:  A relatively recent repaint-of a 20 plus year old unit-passes a relic of the past, a switch stand that once controlled a switch for a local business. In a quirk of fate, this was a second meeting for me with this engine. I had shot it back in March of 2005, leading NS 13T at Binghamton NY. It was in Grinstein Green in those days. Look for it in the NS in the Southern Tier album.

Im looking at an empty oil train heading back to KC, and on to the frozen north, not that you can tell the difference, judging by the snow.

Unusual scene
Title:  Unusual scene
Description:  We don't get much snow here, most years less than a foot for the whole season. The week before I got this show of Q KCNL passing the cemetery at CP Flint Creek we had around 10", and it was cold, down to -12 three nights earlier. The up side was, when the trains ran, it made for a good photo. A four unit set rolls south with 66 freight, a DPU, followed by 16 two unit auto racks, and 15 stack platforms.

Title:  Stretched out
Description:  The southbound Q train seen from a slightly closer angle to the tracks. The high cars make for an interesting long view. He appeared to be slowing for a meet, and had a red board at the south end of the siding. The meet was probably the northbound grain train we saw this day at Westville, with KCSM 4673 leading.

Tunnel of trees
Title:  Tunnel of trees
Description:  When I lived in the northeast, this was a pervasive problem: rail lines were so long established that the trees had, over many years, grown up around them, making photography a challenge. So it is here as well, as this northbound Q train rolls in a long, shaded trough, the trees having grown up over the years.
