Description:  Banging across the UP (former MP, nee T&P) mainline. I'd always heard UP was trying to replace this diamond because it was worn so badly but refused to pay for a new one. The MoW crews did the best they could to keep it going and UP found one elsewhere on their route, brought it down but it was off by a few degrees so it sat unused in the weeds for several years.

Description:  A former Amtrak SDP40 is the trailing unit of a Santa Fe manifest freight rolling through Tower 55. These units were not built with front walkways but a small pathway. Santa Fe added a larger walkway, handrails, and notches in the nose for a stepwell. This unit is maintained under an agreement with MK, note the MKM lettering below the road number.

This locomotive was delivered to CNW in January 1994 and is about a year and a half old in this photo but still looks new. In January 1998 this locomotive would be repainted and renumbered to UP 9763 and is still on the roster as of 2014.

Description:  Delivered to Western Pacific as WP 813 Silver Palace in May 1948, this dome would join Auto Train as AUT 462 in June 1970 until purchased by Ed Braun at auction in December 1981 after the demise of Auto Train. Vista Rail Inc purchased this car in 1988 becoming RATX 800273 then leased to Branson Scenic, White River Scenic (as Calico Rock), RailTex/RailCruise America, Wisconsin Central, and finally purchased by Algoma Central, given a total rebuild becoming AC 800273 Spirit of Superior. In this photo Silver Palace brings up the rear of Amtrak 21 Texas Eagle during her short stint with RailTex.

Description:  Looking like just another SD45 on Southern Pacific's large stable of 20 cylinder behemoths, this locomotive isn't what it seems. Delivered to Pennsylvania in January 1968 as SD45 6230, this was one of the last diesels delivered to PRR before Penn Central. After the merger this diesel became PC 6230 then Conrail 6230 in 1976. After retirement from Conrail this diesel went to work for Chicago & Northwestern as 6553 and received CNW yellow and green until being retired again. This locomotive was picked up by Morrison Knudsen, rebuilt and sent to Southern Pacific as SD40M-2 8652. After the UP merger 8652 became UP 2728 in full UP colors but was not in active service for long and soon afterward placed into long term storage. After being released by UP, this diesel spent several more years in storage and was then picked up by Missouri and Northern Arkansas and currently works as 2728 still in UP yellow.
