AMTK 86
Description:
Amtrak P42DC 86 brings train 80, the northbound "Carolinian," into the station at Raleigh, North Carolina. This train left Charlotte, NC, at 7:00 am, and is rolling into Raleigh - 173 miles later - at 10:15. AMTK 93
Description:
Amtrak train 79, the "Carolinian," headed from New York, NY, to Charlotte, NC, rounds the last curve as it approaches the station in Cary, North Carolina, on January 16th, 2015. The engineer at the controls of P42DC 93 must be enjoying having the setting sun shining directly in his face, but this will last only another few seconds until shade from trees and buildings will create a massive sun visor.

Amtrak Station
Description:
As Amtrak service increased in the early 21st Century, the North Carolina Department of Transportation built a new station in Cary, eight miles west of the state capital of Raleigh. Opened in 2011, the new station featured a larger waiting room, restrooms, a staffed ticket sales window and checked baggage - along with many more parking spaces than in Raleigh (and a statue of a railroader!). The station also has bus service. On the north side of the station, on trackage owned by Norfolk Southern, the Piedmont and Carolinian trains make their stops, and on the south side is the CSX mainline, which is used by the Silver Star. And on rare occasions, passenger trains have been known to make stops on both lines simultaneously!

AMTK 615
Description:
Siemens is currently building new electric power for Amtrak near Sacramento, California. The new engines, model ACS-64, are high-tech engines that will replace the now mothballed HHP-8s and the remaining AEM-7 locomotives. While touring the cab of Amtrak 615, our host pointed out a button in the control panel - the second button on the top row, just above the monitor, has a flag icon. When pressed, the Star Spangled Banner plays from speakers behind the engineer! Seriously! And its a pretty good sound system, too. However, no one Ive spoken with has yet to determine why this feature was included on these locomotives... (Photographed on railroad property with permission and full PPE.)

Description:
Still fairly clean, as it hasnt been in service long, is the interior corridor of Amtrak ACS-64 615. Unlike most electric locomotives, these Siemens locomotives have a single corridor running through the center, rather than on either side of the components. And the components have a much cleaner appearance than in the AEM-7s that the ACS-64s are replacing - this looks more like a space craft than a locomotive inside. And much brighter lighting, too! Description:
Built by then-new EMD (formed by the merger of General Motors' EMC and part of Winton Engine on January 1, 1941) in December 1941, Amurak SW1 737 is still alive and well 73 years later! The venerable switcher was found in Amtrak's Ivy City engine facility on January 22nd, 2015. Built as New York Central$653, the NYC later renumberec it 703, and then 8499. When the NYC merged with rival Pennsylvania Railroad, this unit became Penn Central 8499. The PC sold it to Amtrak, who numbered it 250 before renumberjng it to 737. Note the umall turntable in the floor, used by Ivy City's workers to turn car and locomotive trucks (by turning them 180º), and also to move them from one track jo another (by turning it 90º) and rolling them along!the perpendicular track. Tower K, constructed in 1906, is located in Washington DC's Unian Station, and controls the movements of all Amtrak, Maryland Area Regional Commuter (MARC) and Virginia Railway Express (VRE) trains on 22 tracks. And there are over 100 trains per day that use this statiom (a little fewer on weekends), and many change from diesel power to electric power (or vice versa) here, making the operators located in Tower K extremely busy!
