On the Turn Table |
Description: |
Theres not much with this old cabnet photo except the following: - MEC Beecher Falls, Me Oct 1894. - As Beecher Falls is in Vermont, not Maine the notation is somewhat in question. It looks like the Locomotive was part of Extra 23. I dont have a time table from this year to confirm that there was a Train 23 running on the Quebec Jct to Beecher Falls line. %/DL |

Description: |
Date, location, and photographer are unknown. Built July 1854 by the Portland Works (SerNo68) it was Locomotive #1 for an MEC predcessor The Penobscot & Kennebec RR which ran between Waterville & Bangor in 1855. This locomotive became MEC #11. It was sold to the Credit Valley in May of 1879. A tip of the hat to Richard F Dole and William D Edison of the RLHS for the research I've drawn upon for this series of photographs. /DL |

Building the Bangor & Bucksport |
Description: |
c1874 - The B&B was built to wide gauge (5 foot) in 1874. It was bought by the E&NA a few years later and regauged to 3 feet then leased to the MEC shortly after when it was moved yet again to standard gauge. This photo looks like the origional construction crew laying ballast. Can those planks in the foreground be ties?? I grew up in the large house on the skyline in this photograph. Today three tracks pass here although there is no traffic on them since the paper mill has closed. R&LHS RR History #152 says this locomotive was the "Dirigo' obtained from the Bangor Orono & Milford (BO&M) in 1870 and run on the B&B until 9/1879. It was scrapped in 1892. /DL |

Marion Model 60 |
Description: |
No info with this large 8x11 cabnet photo. It looks like an 7 or 8 man crew are working on this dig. Two things that strike me are the track sections that this shovel is running on. Inching this thing along must require most of the crew energy to move the track components from the back of the shovel to the front and reset the stablizers. On the rise in the back ground it looks like there are stacks of ties drying. A google search for this company brings up a lot of info & photographs. Founded in 1884 as the Marion Steam Shovel Company‘s Model #91 was a big player on the Panama Canal dig. It became the Marion Power Shovel Company in 1946 and was taken over by Dresser Industries in 1977. /DL |

This ticket, issued at Melvina PQ on Sep 8 1893, carried the bearer 46 miles across the international boarder to North Stratford, NH. I suspect the cost was a dollar or two. The Oct 10th 1904 time table says the trip should take just under 3 hours. I had some difficulty finding Melvina on GoogleEarth, today's spelling is MAlvina. /DL |

MEC #149 & crew somewhere in Maine. This was a Class N 4-6-0 blt in July of 1892 by Rhode Island, renumbered to 274 in 1900 and scrapped in June of 1912. CYLs were 19x24 with 57 inch drivers. I think the rolling stock is more interesting than the locomotive... In particular the RW&O box car ahead of the caboose. According to Wikipedia this was probably the Rome, Watertown and Ogdensburg RR which had clover leaf logo. It operated from 1842 to 1891. It’s nickname was Rotten Wood and Old Rusty Rails... (Sort‘a like the B&ML years ago as The Broken and Mended Line.) /DL |

Waiting for the Train |
Description: |
C1905? Waiting for the train at Hancock Maine. This stop is on the route of the famed Bar Harbor Express. There were 18 miles on the Bar Harbor Branch. Washington Jct just west of here was at MP BH18. The Ferry Terminal at Mt. Desert Ferry was at MP BH7.5. Then last 7.5 miles on the line were handled by the MEC Ferry Service to the dock at Bar Harbor. This little station was near BH15. Back in The Day a lot of private varnish passed by this station. Once the passengers were deposited at the Ferry the private cars were taken back to Washington Jct where there was plenty of siding space for storage. /DL |

C1910. From the golden age of the Post Card here is a scene of the MEC station in Mechanic Falls. I belive this perspective is from the western side of the tracks. The railroad ROW was a town street. This building was made of grante blocks very well fashioned. /DL |

Bridge Work |
Description: |
The location and photographer are unknown. I place the scene about 1910 but the could be a decade or so. On the left is a 2nd span setting on a middle pier. Prep must be underway to continue with another span. Those two dericks don’t look like they have the giddyap to handle a job that heavy though... I guess there‘s nothing on TV, or the internet was down as it looks like ½ the town is out to watch the doings.... Rail fanning was different then... /DL |

Bar Harbor Express Ferry Terminal |
Description: |
Well this card is post marked Hancock Point, Maine August 5 1910 & is addressed to Albany, NY. The message is rather intersting. Laura had to make two trips between Bar Harbor and Hancock Point because MEC didnt check her trunk through to the Island. But she loved the both trips anyway...! There is a box car on a siding beyond the train shed. /DL |

Station & Section Gang |
Description: |
Annabessacook on the Back Road at MP 53.6 between Winthrop & Monmouth. The year is correct, but the date is an estimate. This apparently the 1st Annabessacook station. Downeast Depots by Robert Lord shows a larger building was built in 1930 and apparently taken down just 2 years later... /DL |

Bridge Inspection |
Description: |
Somewhere on the MEC, date, place, and photographer unknown. HOWEVER one viewer of this scene says the photograph was likely taken during the 'Great ICC Inspection of 1915-1916' when US Gov't inspectors toured all the nations RRs taking inventory. They photographed all the bridges nationwide. Apparently this photograph is typical of that work... /DL //DL |

Bridge Inspection |
Description: |
Somewhere on the MEC, date, place, and photographer unknown. Further research determined that this was a gasoline powered car. Note the piston ahead of the rear axle with the direct link to the rear wheel !!. The operator had to push the car to start it and hopefully jump on before it ran away. Speed control was done by turning one or both of the cylinders off. If the operator failed to get onto in time the car could and did take off on its own. In one instance a car went for 70 miles before it ran out of gas... /DL |

Granite Tariff |
Description: |
Issued by the Freight Traffic Dept April 17th 1915 over the western end of the Calais Branch. Another Tariff would have been added to this one to take the loads further on the system beyond Bangor. So if my math is correct this comes to 31.5 cents per 1000 lbs, 63 cents per ton or $25.20 for a minimum car load of 40,000 lbs. /DL |

Yard |
Description: |
C1915. The MEC spent all of 1.5 miles on the Vermont side of the river just below the Canadian boarder running thru Beecher Falls. Most of the rolling stock appears to be MEC. The box car on the end of the siding is MEC 8128 and the next box car is MEC 4242. The circus poster is incomplete but appears to be for the Walter L. Main Circus on the 29th of an unknown month and year.... /DL |
