Work train |
Description: |
The guys who make it possible for the coal train to run go east on track 1 at Campville in a blaze of color as the JC coal train waits. The railfan chase vehicle is at far right. I was a route driver for a commercial laundry, which allowed me some freedom to watch the action while working. I didn't waste an opportunity. |

Checking the rails |
Description: |
Conrail had a track inspection train that normally ran behind B23-7 1933, which was specially equipped for the task. Sometimes, on some of the less heavily trafficked lines. theyd go out with one unit and a track geometry car. Here we see such a situation, with a single GP 40-2 and Track Geometry car 21 rolling east on the Lehigh Line near Ulster PA. Its a far cry from GP 38s or C 420s in Cornell Red. |

Unusual power |
Description: |
Conrail had 100 units they designated GP 10, rebuilt from the several hundred GP 9s inherited from its component roads at start up. Typically, these were found in eastern PA, though sometimes elsewhere in the system. Work trains on the Tier tended to get B23-7s, U23Bs, and GP 38s or 40s for power, so it was unusual to find one of these GP 10s at Waverly on a work extra picking up old ties. It was nice to hear the mellow 567 sound as it worked past. Check out the railfan chase vehicle at left, and how about the side of that building??CR |

Off the Corning Secondary |
Description: |
The Southern Tier picnic train comes off the Corning Secondary onto the Southern Tier, rolling behind the yard office and shop off the 1951 connection to the Erie. This was part of the line relocation that took the tracks out of downtown Corning, where they ran in the street. The NYC line ran on the Erie to what is now CP Corning, under the NY 414 overpass, where the ex NYC line splits to head north along Seneca Lake, connecting with what is now the CSX Chicago Line at Lyons. The GP 40 will pull the train through CP W Glass onto the Corning Secondary, clear the signal at North Glass, and cut off. It will go back to Gang Mills, the passenger train, now with the Es in the lead, will head east on the Tier. |

OIEL was a hard train to get. Sometimes it ran before dawn in the Tier, so photo ops were limited. Military special |
Description: |
Conrail ran quite a few MIL trains carrying various types of equipment. These increased during the Gulf War, which would begin the following year. Todays train has 16 cars of tanks, seen from the Kirkwood-Conklin connector. Frito Lay and now defuncty 84 Lumber are at left. Note the white bar with red ends on the front handrail of the locomotive. The tanks were slightly oversize, and this was used to check clearances. The Erie, originally built to a six foot gauge, had no clearance issues. Meets, however, could pose a problem, and other trains were supposed to come to a complete stop when meeting on of these MIL trains on double track. |

Description: |
Conrail had a track geometry train that took all kinds of engineering measurments on the track structure. It was permanently assgined to B23-7 1933, which was specially outfitted to work with the equipment in the cars. We see it on the ex LV at Sayre, laying over for a trip down the Lehigh Line the next day. |
