Album Info:One of the more productive ways to get train photos, for me, anyway, is a chase. If I'm lucky, I'll get one going away from home, then catch something else coming back. Most of the time, it works best if I catch a northbound and follow it to either Noel or McElhany near Neosho, though chasing south to Stilwell and back is also a workable plan. Living in Siloam Springs, I can go either way. This album is the result of those chases.

Caught him
Title:  Caught him
Description:  I was coming back from Gentry, and crossed the KCS at Davidson Rd. I looked south to see headlights coming around the curve down by the Cobb mill. I pulled across and hustled out to get set up. This was the catch, a northbound empty AEPX coal train with eight units. The second two were the best looking, a pair of ex CNW GEs that had been freshly painted. They would have looked better in CNW paint, but these looked good. Too bad they werent leading.

Power balancing
Title:  Power balancing
Description:  Eight units is a lot of power, especially since most trains go through here with five. The extras were likely DPUs that accumulated at Heavener, since the heavy trains are southbound. One of the returning extras was the SD70ACe class unit, 4000, which has been repainted out of its old gray scheme, seen here trailing.

Down in the hollow
Title:  Down in the hollow
Description:  My next spot was north of Dorsey siding, just south of Gravette. It took me a little bit to catch him, since I had to let the whole train pass me at Davidson Rd, and the lighting is not good for a northbound at Gentry that time of day anyway. As it was, I didnt beat him here by much, having just enough time to get there and turn the car around before he showed. I still got a good shot, but then had to wait for the train-all 125 cars of it-to pass me again.

Caught up again
Title:  Caught up again
Description:  I had to wait for the train to pass me at Dorsey, so it was a good chase to catch him. There was no way I was going to get him at Gravette, and he was going under the bridge at Sulphur Springs when i went over. I heard him call the signal at South Noel as I was passing the state line. He was going to meet the southbound H train there, so I was able to get him. Otherwise, it would have been a hard run to get him on the bridge at Ginger Blue. Here we are slowing for the meet, passing the old station.

Past the auqomatic
Title:  Past the auqomatic
Description:  The H train rolls south over the hump from Decatur, passing the ABS signal, now lit, as it comes toward me. This spot works in your favor if chasing a heavy train south,=as most southbounds are. This one was 106 cars, and even with three ES 44's, it dragged over this short grade south of Decatur. Chasing a northbound on this line can be a chalnenge, since they are usually well powered for the tonnage of empty coal or grain cars. Loaded southbounds are much less of a challenge, as they work grades out of Sulphur Sprimgs, into Decatur, and again into Siloam.

Title:  Downtown
Description:  The H train passes through downtown Gentry, giving an overview of the scene. Curran Feed is on the left, an easily recognizeable feature of downtown. They once had a siding. The station was at left, where there is also a team track, occauionally used to set out bad order cars.

We start with a meet
Title:  We start with a meet
Description:  I was home on Saturday afternoon and heard a horn. I went into town to see what was going on, to find a northbound empty coal train in the hole at Siloam. As I reached the light at Main St, I heard the detector at Davidson Rd go off for a southbound. I pulled a quick U turn and set up on the US 412 overpass, catching this southbound 113 car H train as it passed the waiting coal train. He had a DPU, but I didn't stick around to see it.

Description:  I got out of Noel quickly, wanting to check the shot at Ginger Blue. The sun wasnt far enough around to light the west side of the bridge, so I bagged that and headed for Anderson. I was able to get this shot of the train passing the old station, now city hall, and the park adjacent. Good place to stop with the kids.

Rhonda Rd
Title:  Rhonda Rd
Description:  Most of the time, when I come up this far, I shoot at Goodman if the sun is workable, or at McElhany, since its easy to reach and often there are meets there. Just south of McElhany is Rhonda Rd, which it turns out has a pretty good open shot of a northbound. So I learned a new place today.

Going away
Title:  Going away
Description:  The DPU on the empty northbound passes between the signals at Mc Elhany as the train pulls away toward Neosho and the BNSF, ex Frisco crossing. I really should have quit on this guy at Noel, and followed the southbound back, but I dont get up here all that often, and it was still early enough to have good light. I did get a bonus in the Government Lead siding, though, so that was a plus.

Canned
Title:  Canned
Description:  After the empty coal train passed, I saw this train pushed back into Government Lead with a pair of AC4400s, including 4600 in Belle paint, one of a very few of the old GEs to be repainted. Sometimes the out and back chase means the "back" part of it is a deadhead move, as it were. So it was today, but at least for the extra miles to McElhany, there was this train, so it wasnt totally a bust.

Spavinaw Creek
Title:  Spavinaw Creek
Description:  Sometimes out and back is a one sided event. We went out last Friday because it was a nice day-55 degrees and sun-too nice to stay in. I had not heard a train in several hours, so after lunch we headed north, figuring we'd run into something along the way. That turned out to be a southbound grain train, which we saw at Gravette. We chased down to Spavinaw Creek, where KCS must have cleared out some brush along the tracks, along with the usual die back in winter. A 100 car grain train rolls off the short through truss over Spavinaw Creek, between Gravette and the north end of Dorsey siding, in a view I have not seen before, and impossible when everything is leafed out.

Catching rays
Title:  Catching rays
Description:  One of the great things about winter is the low sun angle, which really saturates the colors. The down side is, the sun never gets very high, and shots you can take in the summer are in shadow. Such is the case at Decatur, where I catch this southbound grain train getting some sun in between the shadows from the adjacent Simmons Foods buildings.

Its all about the chickens
Title:  Its all about the chickens
Description:  A train full of chicken feed rolls past a place that sells....chicken feed. Across the tracks is a store called The Chicken Coop, which is a junk...er, consignment shop...that has a lot of chicken related items. Trailing unit 4577 is one of only a few AC44's that have been painted into the Belle scheme. There are many more SD70's that have gotten the treatment.
