Description: |
Here is a photo from a reprint of the November 1956 issue of "Modern Railroads" magazine, pages 14-15. Photo Caption: "Over its vast rail network, Pennsy operates 400 fast 'arranged-service' through freights daily. By-passing intermediate yards is one technique the Pennsy uses in meeting today's economic and competitive challenges. It schedules 800 passenger trains daily." Depicted here at the southern end of the Rockville Bridge are two westbound trains: the passenger train has just departed the Harrisburg Station on its way to Pittsburgh, while the freight train has just departed Enola Yard on its way to Conway Yard and points West. |

Description: |
Here is a photo from a reprint of the November 1956 issue of "Modern Railroads" magazine, pages 14-15. Photo Caption: "Diesel locomotives work 'under the wire' to help out during traffic peaks. PRR has enough electric locomotives to handle normal traffic. A more efficient operation today, gross ton miles per freight train hour rose from 37,150 in 1946 to 53,205 in 1955." Shown here at the Paoli Station (R to L) are PRR engines #5793 and another E-8 whose number is not recorded. Both were built by GM-EMD. #5793 is an EP-22 built in May of 1952 and rated at 2,250 horsepower. Also visible in the distance is PAOLI Tower. |

Here is a photo from a reprint of the November 1956 issue of "Modern Railroads" magazine, page 16. Photo Caption: "Four head-end diesels and two pushers speed this eastbound freight up mainline grade near Pittsburgh. Schedules are planned for reliability." The caption for these photos leads one to assume that they are of the same train . . . but how can the same train occupy two different tracks at the same time? The location is an approximation. |
