BNSF 3862 |
Description: |
Unfortunately due to work schedules my dad and I did not have a true "End of the Year" trip scheduled. I had to go by myself this year, and with talks about signal replacement on the CSX Indy Line between Sidney and Ansonia, I knew that I should give that area a try just in case Im not able to get back down there again. I decided to start in Elroy where the first pair of intermediates are. Upon arrival, two westbound headlights could be seen on both tracks. One belonging to I131 and the other belonging to M313 which would end up working the yard at Ansonia. I131 soon overtook M313 and passed me with a sole BNSF Tier 4 GEVO. These trains come from and go to the UP so seeing BNSF power on them is pretty rare. |

Description: |
CSX L428 marked up with IC over in Ansonia to head east to Sidney to do work at Cargill, so I raced over to that end to get them splitting the pair at CP 189. No cars on this train today unfortunately, but anything splitting this pair is pretty cool. As far as I know this is the only signal pair that has a doll arm left on the Indy Line. |

With M313 already working in Ansonia I knew that the only way I was going to be able to get it by signals that I had not yet taken photos of would be to backtrack to Union City. While this wasnt the original plan, I caved and went anyway. CSX I008 was coming east and it ended up showing up before M313 had finished working in the yard at Ansonia. |

CSX E312 was coming west along with M313 and moving was out of the question. M313 pulled down to Deerfield Road on the Ohio side of Union City for a crew swap, and E312 passed them on the opposite track, while I grabbed the train passing the last pair of trilights that remain on the Indy Line in Indiana. |

CSX L432 marked up with IC and began their trip east to Sidney out of Ansonia. I grabbed them coming by the QI 187 intermediates west of Dawn. A sole SD40-3 leads the way today with a pretty friendly crew giving a nice horn salute from the sharp K5LA. |

Description: |
Tuesdays and Fridays the RJ Corman interchanges with the CSX at Ansonia and while I was shooting the local on CSX, I could hear a horn in the distance signifying they were on their way up fron Greenville. Sure enough, I found them a few miles south of Ansonia and made it to the decrepit distant signal with CSX for my sole shot. Recently, RJC moved a "new" Geep to the property to replace the GP20 that had been on this operation for years due to it blowing out its guts. While it is sad that the GP20 is gone, Ill take this GP38-2, especially since it faces north. Both the GP16 and 20 that worked this job together faced south. |

CSX 1776 |
Description: |
Things got very quiet as they usually do on the Indy Line after Corman came in so I began working east. CSX 1776, the Spirit of Our Armed Forces" unit was leading northbound I142 on the Toledo Sub and with it being so quiet outside I began to wonder if it was really worth my time sitting along the Indy Line to get any of the other signals. I eventually caved and went to the Toledo Sub right as I142 was working north through Sidney. Thanks to I75, I was able to chase the train to Wapak where I finally got ahead of it, and grabbed a shot of it passing the station there. This was the last Spirit unit I had yet to get leading a train, so in a way it was worth it, but that means another trip to the Indy Line will be in store at some point. |

I decided that driving back south to the Indy Line wasnt worth my time so I decided to go into Lima and see what I could find. Low and behold things were all quiet there as well, but I did happen to see the tail end of the CFE Robb Yard transfer getting back onto their own tracks at NS Tower. I made it back to Cole Street Yard Limits just in time to get it passing underneath the distant signal with CSX in downtown. The original PL head has been replaced with this new trilight which has been up for a little over a year now. I was never fortunate enough to get a train under the PL, but at least they didnt replace it with a vader. |

CSX 5252 |
Description: |
The only CSX train anywhere close was a X511 that got permission to depart south as I was getting lunch at McDonalds. Trains move very slowly through Lima so I was able to get down to see it in time, but I decided with things being so slow that it wasnt worth my time to hang around the tracks anymore, so I decided to go home and watch Notre Dame play in the Sun Bowl against Oregon State. Notre Dame won that game 40-8 and the second half was nearly as boring as sitting beside dead railroad tracks. But, I do love college football and I do love Notre Dame, and since I had changed my plans last second I wasnt really up for watching trains the rest of the day anyway. I had already scheduled the second half of my Indy Line Adventure for the following week on Wednesday. Hopefully things will go smoothly! |

UP 6776 |
Description: |
I definitely wasnt planning on my first trip of the year to be to the Indy Line making up for lost progress from the last trip of the year from last year, but here I was on a very cold morning outside of tiny Houston, OH getting the last few pairs of signals I had yet to shoot trains by. I made it to the QI 174 intermediates in time to grab I131 coming west with a pair of UP units, and a good GE leading nonetheless. I never have shot a train by this pair, and hopefully, it wont be the only one before they come down. |

Description: |
Another shot that I had never tried before was getting an eastbound passing the grain elevator from the Ohio 66 overpass in Houston. CSX I008 was coming east which would be the perfect opportunity to give that shot a try. In the summer months the leaves on the trees block out any opportunities to try this shot out, but it is perfectly possible in the Winter, and I would say it did work out well. |

After the local, everything went quiet. I knew there was a M363 to come west and the L428 would eventually come back west as well, but there was no sign that either was going to show up anytime soon. The L428 had the same geep trio from the week before and I really wanted to get them coming westbound by the QI 172 pair, but I also didnt want to wait on them for forever. CSX M510 was coming north on the Toledo Sub, so I caved and left my post on the Indy Line and went to Swanders. Sure enough, as M510 was coming north through Sidney, M363 was going west. So, I missed my westbound shot at QI 172. Oh well, maybe next time. |

CSX 3431 |
Description: |
With the other local nowhere close to being ready to head back to Ansonia and with nothing else on the Toledo Sub, I decided to go back into Sidney to get some lunch. I knew both the IORY LSL and B Job were going to meet at Jackson Center and that was my next target, but the LSL had just marked up with Saint Albans right before I got back into Sidney so I decided that I had enough time to sit down and eat instead of eat in my car. Well, that ended up being the wrong decision, as I missed both the LSL and the B Job by minutes in Jackson Center. Oh well, thats just how the day goes sometimes. With that I went to Botkins and sat for a bit but no signs or sounds of CSX picking up made that almost worthless, so I decided that it was time to go to the trains and see what I could find in Lima just as I had done the week prior. Once again, Lima was very dead, but NS was interchanging with the IORY which gave me something to shoot. While waiting on that, CFE 10 keyed up the Chicago Dispatch to get a warrant to go west from Cole to Adams, and since they showed their location as Lima I knew they were still catchable by the depot in town. While it was just a runthrough Hamlet grain train from CSX, I had never gotten a westbound shot by the station before, so that was cool. |

Then finally, right after sunset, I heard chatter of an approaching northbound on the Toledo Sub. CSX Q506, however, had a 50ish or so drop off for the yard in Lima, so going north to get it passing CPLs was a no go. I did get it passing signals however, just not CPLs, rather the vaders at Eureka. |

Dark and cold rain meant it was time to call it a day. I had church in the evening anyway so it was time to head back toward Indiana. I stopped at Captain Ds for supper, and afterwards made my way back toward the Hoosier State. I had just enough time, however, to get a quick exposure of the RJC switcher that sits in Spencerville on the old Erie. One day, I hope to see this running. Still have a few things to cover on the Indy Line before the signals wave a final goodbye, but for now, I think I got what I needed. Been a pretty slow, but still pretty good two days of trains along CSX! |
