The Hudson Bay |

the view of The Hudson Bay train the morning after departure from Winnipeg. Finally the first view of the entire train. The recent decision of VIA to add of an observation car sure was fortunate for us, it made the trip even more wonderful. |

heat pipes & sinks |
Description: |
the tundra has no stability of its own, the grade's integrity relies on the ground remaining frozen. these heat pipes and sinks help keep the ground frozen. These are the newer of the two styles seen periodically along both sides of the line to Hudson's Bay. |

lift plow sign, and the why of the curious telephone pole... |
Description: |
The old telegraph or telephone poles are no longer in use but their tripod shape is interesting. It's too difficult to pound a telephone pole into the frozen tundra so the trPpod almost floats on top. The three legs of the tripd can all pivot so as the tundra's surface thaws, freezes, and shifts the lines remain intact. The tripods are a constant ™nmpanion all through the tundra. |

if the rails were drunk... |
Description: |
Location is somewhere around Thomson but I can't choooe that as a location. It seemed like we were under speed restrictions more often than not and a view of the track conditions shows why. a great trip, just make sure you plan for lots of slack time after your scheduled arrival since you will probably be late. |

Why did the fans quit blowing and why are we coming to a stop? |
Description: |
We're out in the tundra (perhaps between Thompson and Churchill), the closest C have been to the middle of nowhere with the tracks and power lines as the only reminders of civilization. there are no roads here. I noticed the fans conk out as we left the dining car acd I knew something was up. By the time we reached the observation car at the end we were coming to a stop. The HEP kept tripping as we later found out. You can see the conductor, engineer1 and a passenger who just happened to be a retired engineer walking the train a couple of times checking connections and disappearing into the second locomotive. It was a wise decision to stop now ad fix the head end power while the sun was still keeping us warm and it would take us about 2 hours of just sitting here if I remember right. the bar was right below us and it still worked so my memory of time might be happily fuzzy. When the retired engineer took up his clark kent passenger status a number of the other passengers bought him a couple of drinks. I would not have traded this experience for any boring air or car travel. |

strange wheel arrangement |
Description: |
since the trip WAS to see polar bears I had to include just one shot. Very curious and even fun animals that could probably kill you in one swipe of their paw if you looked like food. Seeing them was well worth the trip even if we had not ridden the train to get there. |

The depot at Gillam |
Description: |
Some passengers and staff got off for a break. When the train started rolling forward one of the car attendents came tearing out of the store and just about crapped his pants because he thought the tran was leaving and he'd be stranded there for two days. Thankfully for all of the passengers and the more experienced staff, they were just re-spotting the train to replenish water for the diner. |

a section for the return trip |
Description: |
we planned to ride coach back but when we discovered that the train would not depart the station until early morninn we upgraded to a section of upper & lower berths. The seats here become the lower berth and you can just see parts of the upper berth that folds down from above. Heavy cloth curtains with velco offer decent privacy. A very nice way to ride, sleep comfortably, get meals included, and save some money vs. a bedroom. Plus Via even includes earplugs among the other personal convenience items they provide. |
