Seaboard Coast Line U30B #1710 is the trailing unit of Birmingham (AL) bound Frisco run-thru train #334 |
Description: |
The lead GP30 is flying white "extra" flags and, in the distance, the old Cragford warehouse is in its last winter as it will be removed in the spring of 1974 as part of the project to bridge over the adjacent crossing and Crooked Creek which is out of site in the valley to the left. The old Cragford "Section" house is off the passing siding to the left. The former Cragford depot sat on the inside of the curve, just beyond the warehouse, and had been gone several years by the time of this photograph |

Seaboard Coast Line U36B #1785 leads Waycross (GA) bound train SCL #307 past the pulpwood yard (located on the former House Track that had been specially modified for this customer) |
Description: |
1974 was the beginning of a bridge project that significantly altered the landscape in little Cragford, Alabama. A long and worn-out one-lane wooden bridge that crossed Crooked Creek over a deep ravine was replaced by a modern bridge that not only spanned the creek but soared above the railroad at the exact point where this photograph was taken. As part of the project, the woodyard layout was reversed and the switch (which opened to the north just beyond the bottom unit in this consist) was relocated to a southward opening switch several hundred feet in front of SCL 1785. |

Seaboard Coast Line #334, the daily Frisco/UP run-thru train bound for East Thomas Yard in Birmingham, has been routed thru the siding as the Lineville Switcher has the main tied up while working customers on the Hill Track |
Description: |
With three, and at times as many as five customers, The Hill Track could quite a chunk of time to switch. To switch customers and classify cars to and from those customers could tie up both the main and the House Track. The cars on the main are south cars destined for Manchester and beyond while the cars on the House Track are north cars destined for Birmingham and beyond. When switching is complete, the cars will be coupled in one long cut, pulled by the north end signal at Lineville and backed down the siding to the outside track. The cars will then be shoved into the Outside Track (on the other side of the NP box) with the south cars coming to rest across from the front door of the depot. The north cars will be uncoupled and pulled to the north of the outside track (about 60 car lengths from the depot) in a ritual that would be repeated daily. |

My great friend, Jim Matuska (http://matuskarailart.com) painted this beauty to serve as the cover illustration for the 4th Quarter 2011 edition of Lines South (ACL/SAL/SCL Historical Society Magazine). - Bicentennial paint |
Description: |
For several years, SCL trains 587 & 588 (The Wadley Turn) operated a Santa Train on the last Saturday before Christmas. As I prepared my Lines South article about the Manchester, Georgia based Santa Train, I realized that I needed a much better illustration than my photos. Jim Matuska captured the spirit of the train perfectly by using a compilation of my photos, taken over several years, of this annual train. Thank you, Jim and Merry Christmas - Bernie |
