Havre de Grace-ful |
Description: |
By Esther Fairchild: Northbound Amtrak train starts across the big Susquehanna River bridge on the Northeast Corridor at Havre de Grace, Maryland in the Fall of 1987 (date approx.). About this picture, Esther comments: "To me the interesting thing here is that you can see four bridges across the river: The PRR (Amtrak) bridge, the Pulaski Highway (Route 40) bridge, the B&O (Chessie) railroad bridge, and the Kennedy Highway (I-95) bridge, all in a row." |

Pushing Home |
Description: |
A set of Amtrak Bi-Level cars serves as the evening ride home from Chicago for Indiana commuters. Buffington Harbor, on the south shore of Lake Michigan and the name of area around the place where this photo was made, was at one time a teeming industrial base. Now all that (and the Amtrak commuter train, too) is gone. I believe the cars are ex-Chicago and North Western; the train schedule (which I think was called "The Calumet") was a remnant from the Pennsylvania Railroad twice each way commuter trains between Valparaiso, Indiana, and Chicago Union Station; those trains survived even into Conrail times. . Date very approximate. |
