Album Info:Photos of the American Freedom train arriving in Chicago on July 27, 1975. These photos are not well documented. I was in college at the time and thought I put away all my silly trains forever. The AFT pulled me back and I shot some slides on Ektachrome and forgot about them until recently. The only marks are the date stamp on the slide mounts. If anyone knows the locations, please leave a Comment and I will correct the descriptions. Thanks.

Description:  American Freedom Train 1 somewhere on the south side of Chicago, Illinois on July 27, 1975, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. That's my friend Chris Burritt rolling 16mm film as the AFT makes its way into Chicago for display. Alas, Chris passed away in 2008, and I do not know what happened to his film.

Title:  AFT American Freedom Train 1
Description:  American Freedom Train 1 at about Lake Street and Cicero Avenue in Chicago, Illinois on July 27, 1975, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The AFT was routed over the Belt Railway of Chicago to get from the ICG to the C&NW. It is seen here passing under the CTA's Lake Street elevated and is almost at the C&NW's 40th Street yard. The cutoff at the left is the result of my pushing a 36 exposure roll of film to 37. You know I prayed for a CTA train to pass over during this.

AFT 1
Title:  AFT 1
Description:  On July 27, 1975 The American Freedom Train had just arrived in the Chicago area. Upon arrival, it was first wyed (over greased rails at one point) and then hauled to Navy Pier for a few days of exhibition. This photo shows the train after it was turned but before being moved to Navy Pier. At this point the train was awaiting a C&NW switch engine to haul the train backward to Navy Pier. Due to light rails and clearance restrictions, the locomotive was left behind. As I understand it, the locomotive was moved somewhere near the Merchandise Mart for viewing.

American Freedom Train 40
Title:  American Freedom Train 40
Description:  American Freedom Train Exhibition Car 40 on Illinois Street below Michigan Avenue in Chicago, Illinois on July 27, 1975, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Car 40 contained a model of the B&O 'Arabian' steam locomotive, the Friendship Fire Engine from George Washington's fire company, and a 1904 Oldsmobile Runabout 'The Old Scout' that won the first transcontinental auto race. . The car was a former NYC baggage car. This was a switching move. The steam locomotive power (AFT 1) was cut off and C&NW MP15DC 1306 pulled the AFT from C&NW's 40th Street yard to Navy Pier for a couple of days of public viewing. Even though it was a switching move, the AFT was lit up and on display for all to see, in this case a couple of Chicago Tribune employees.

American Freedom Train 41
Title:  American Freedom Train 41
Description:  American Freedom Train Exhibition Car 41 at Navy Pier in Chicago, Illinois on July 28, 1975, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. As far as I can tell, this was a replica Lunar Rover. Four working rovers were built, three are still on the Moon, unless space aliens car-jacked (rover-jacked?) them. The fourth rover was for spare parts. Several replicas were made for display at various space agencies, this particular replica was on loan from the Smithsonian and is currently on display at Epcot Center.

Title:  American Freedom Trai` 33
Description:  American Freedom Train on display at Navy Pier in Chicago, Illinois on July 28, 1975, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The car nearest the camera was former Southern baggage far 545 and contained storage for the concessions. If I recall correctly, the upper viewing cost nothing, but to get down below had an admission cost. I was cheap.

Title:  American Freedom Train 205
Description:  American Freedom Train 205, The Press Car, on display at Navy Pier in Chicago, Illinois on July 28, 1975, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The following is from freedomtrain.org: AFT Observation Car #205, "The Press Car": Originally Reading commuter coach #1329, the Press Car was likely built by Standard Steel Car in 1922. While on the AFT it was most often referred to as the "Press Car" and had all the facilities journalists would need to report their stories on the AFT -- desks, typewriters, and even telephones wherever a phone line could be brought to the train.

Description:  American Freedom Train 4-8-4 (ex-RDG 2101) 1 at Clinton Street in Chicago, Illinois on July 29, 1975, Kodachrome by J. H. Nixon, Chuck Zeiler collection. Due to clearance issues, light rails, and condition of the track, the locomotive was left at Clinton Street for display while the rest of the American Freedom Train was displayed at Navy Pier, about a half mile behind this location.
