Viewing Album:  Two Steam Locomotives operating at Steam into History

Album Info:Not one, but TWO replica 1860's era 4-4-0 steam locomotives were operating today along the old PRR Northern Central Branch. The regular steam loco for Steam into History is York #17, joined by sister locomotive Leviathan #63. They staged a re-enactment of The Great Locomotive Chase today. I brought along my bicycle because the York County Heritage rail trail parallels the track the whole way. The bike was a big advantage in that I could get to some harder-to-reach photo locations. I was also able to chase the Leviathan on my bicycle for about two miles going north out of New Freedom (downgrade). It was rolling along at about 10 MPH, so I was actually able to get ahead of it on my bike to five different photo locations.

Description:  Photo location is on the curve south of Seitzville. Seitzville is where the photo line for the re-enacted Great Locomotive chase was set up. Having a bicycle allowed me to chase around the curve to get to this location along the York County Heritage Rail Trail. I'd rate it as my favorite photo of the day.

Description:  Leviathan ended up running light to the re-enactment site, but earlier in the day it was coupled to a coach. The original plan was for each steam locomotive to haul a passenger car north to Seitzville. I heard from fellow railfans that there was trouble with the train line air brakes on the Leviathan, so the coach was added to York 17's consist, and the Leviathan ran light instead of hauling a train.
