Sidney Warehousing and Industrial Sites Inc. (SWIS) 244 with oil containment issues at Sidney, Nebraska on February 20, 1984, Kodachrome by Jim Altman, Chuck Zeiler collection. This locomotive was built in June 1956 (c/n 81726) as SP 1055, renumbered in 1965 to 1222. It was retired in January 1976 and sold to Chrome Crankshaft. In September 1977 it was sold to SWIS and in February 1990 it was sold to Sidney & Lowe Railroad. The following is from the book, Comprehensive Guide To Industrial Locomotives Third Edition: The Sioux Army Depot was established in 1942 to manufacture and store ammunition. It closed in 1967 and was redeveloped by SWIS for private use. This S6 - still painted inwhat might be described as distressed SP gray and scarlet - provided the muscle for the rail service utility. |
