PRR 5811, BH-50, c. 1959 |
Description: |
Volkmer. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by William D. Volkmer that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1959. Shown here (R to L) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5811 and another unit whose road number is not recorded. Both are BH-50's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as BP-60's rated at 3,000 horsepower each, but later regeared and classified as BH-50's rated at 2,500 horsepower each. #5811 was constructed in March of 1947 and retired in April of 1962 after just 12 years of revenue service. It's the very first PRR "Centipede"! Partially visible at the far left is the East Altoona Coaling Tipple. |
