Atterbury's M-1 Engines, Page 28, 1979
Title:  Atterbury's M-1 Engines, Page 28, 1979
Description:  Here is page seven of an 11-page cover article by Bert Pennypacker entitled "Atterbury's Engines: Part 1 ~ Great Increases In Horsepower And Speed." It was published originally in the October 1979 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 28. Top Photo Caption: "Horse Shoe Curve ~ left to right: A pair of M-1's lift head-end revenue up 1.8 per cent...a 2-10-0 and a 4-8-2 team up...and a single M-1, 6763, sports a tender worthy of her size as she leads tonnage upgrade on rails being sanded ahead of first and third pairs of drivers. This grade dictated 72-inch wheel." Bottom Photo Caption: "When M-1's were new, a pair of them ~ with 6954 on the point ~ leaned into tonnage at Manhattan Transfer, N.J., in a fine 3/4-view, rods-down pose by the late Fred Eidenbenz (remember his superb 1920's photo essay in May 1970 Trains?)." Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6954, an M-1 built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during December of 1926 and retired in May of 1950 after 24 years of service.
