Here is the "Introduction" to 18 photos by Fred McLeod that are included in a souvenir brochure entitled "Horseshoe Curve; Pennsylvania Railroad; Altoona, Pa." Photo Caption: "Heavy Freight Locomotive on Upgrade." Shown here is PRR engine #6417, a J-1A (2-10-4) "Texas" built in Juniata during July of 1943 and retired in November of 1958 after just 15 years of revenue service. Actually, construction of the Curve commenced in 1852 but it did not open for traffic until 15 February 1854.

Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engkne #6417, a J-1A (2-10-4) "Texas" built in Juniata during July of 1943 and retired in November of 1958 after just 15 years of revenue service. Partially visible on the right is the Blairsville Coalinf Tipple. The datz is an approximation.
