PRR 6420, J-1A, 1951 |
Description: |
Rolfe. Here is an original photo by N. Rolfe that was taken near the 12th Street Footbridge and Passenger Station in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on Sunday, 4 November 1951. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6420, a J-1A (2-10-4) "Texas" built in Juniata during July of 1943 and retired in April of 1958 after just 15 years of revenue service. In this context, it's pulling a manifest freight train that's just come down the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve and is now on its way to the Eastbound Receiving Yard just beyond the 4th Street Footbridge. Note the November snow flurries, as well as the head-end brakeman who is poised between the third and fourth cars of the train. In the background is the part of the power plant for the PRR's 12th Street Car Shops. #3 of 6. |
