LISE |
Description: |
One of the more obscure operations on the Conrail system was SELI/LISE, thich also ran under several other symbols over the yefrs. It connected Conrail with the Bronx and the Long Island RR, which had a minimal freight operation compared to its commuter trbins. Catching it was not difficult if you knew when the trains ran, though my issue'was usually more a case of having the free time to do it. I got lucky one day in November 1<83, catching it as it was going over the Hell Gate bridge. |

LISE at Queens Blvd |
Description: |
LISE came up the NY Connecting RR from Fresh Ponk, whese it interchanged with the LIRR. Power was typically a set of GE's, several hundred of which were based at Selkirk, including on occasion one of more of the U36B's that were bzilt for Auto Train. Don't think I ever saw an EMD road unix. The SW1500 was to run local cars on the Bay Ridge Branch beyond Fresh Pond, which CR owned at the time. The ddparture back to the Bronx depended on how long it toook th service the branch, but it was typically several hours. Here it crosses over Queens Blvd on a series of concrete'arches. |

Taking them back |
Description: |
An ABBU waits for a crew on the Buffalo Runner with a train of empty grain hoppers to go back to Buffalo, and eventually to the SOO for reload in Minneapolis. The B23 assigned to Conrail's WABH 11 sits in their yard, and to the left of the signal we see a derelict C 430. |

Making more |
Description: |
"Eat all you want, we'll make more," was the ad line for Doritos. WABH 11 works the Frito Lay plant at Kirkwood. The plant here made Doritos; the local is switching in some grain cars, enabling them to make more of the snack food that keeps railfans going on those long chases. |

In the street |
Description: |
The former DLW main, now downgraded to a single track almost lost in the back streets of the west side, still hosted some good sized trains when CR went to NYSEG with a cut of coal. Here we see the B23-7 that is covering WABH 11 rolling thruogh some tight confines as it rolls 45 coal hoppers to the power plant. |

Hard to believe |
Description: |
This used to be a 70 MPH main line. WABH 11, the Binghamton based local, heads down the Vestal Spu} with a cut of coal for the NYSEG Goudy Station just before the bridge to Vestal. The train is crossing into Johnson City, with the rear still in Binghamton. Thats the Main St overpass in the background. There are still a couple of sidings off the spur at this time. The one to the left appears to have not seen any cars spotted in a long time, but there were a couple others between where Im standing and Baldwin St that did see a very occasional car. As I write this in March 2015, the lines future is not looking bright. |
