NW 1218 |
Description: |
The only Class A to survive, it is quite fitting that this great beast of a machine is preserved and proudly displayed in the city where it was born many years ago. Indeed a fitting tribute to the skilled staff that worked in the N&W Roanoke shops. |

NW 2-6-6-4 #1220 - Norfolk & Western |
Description: |
Here is another N&W articulated steam loco spotted at Schaeffer's Crossing in Roanoake, VA a day after the N&W fan trip. Like the previous sister #1206, she was built by the N&W shops in 1936 with 70" drivers, whopping 300 psi boiler pressure and a massive 125,897 lb tractive force, Like the rest of the class A articulateds, she was retired between 1958-59, so this may very well have been one of her last times under pressure. |

Norfolk & Western 2-6-6-4 #1232 |
Description: |
Like its sister #1202, N&W 1232 was built by the Norfolk & Western shops in 1936 as class A articulated unit. It sported 70" drivers, developed a massive 300psi, had an overall engine+tender wheelbase of 108.27', and an engine weight of 573,000 lb. Although they had a rating of 13,000 tons slow freight, they could pull passenger trains at 70mph. The cheap coal available to N&W helped support these monsters of the rail until they were retired in 1958-59. |

Description: |
Undoubtedly this 2-6-6-4 would have had a hard time fitting into the roundhouse behind. Built in 1936 by the N&W shops, it was a class A with 70" drivers and producing an astounding 300 psi boiler pressure. Elroy Giffin photo |
