CB&Q F3 162
Title:  CB&Q F3 162
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F3 162 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on November 15, 1963, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in June 1948 on EMD Order 1007A, this three unit F3 set was the only locomotive built under EMD Order E1007. The F3A's were c/n 6506 & 6507, while the B unit was c/n 6508. Considered a single locomotive (or motor, on the CB&Q), it was drawbar connected so there was no need to display suffix letters, although the letters were assigned for maintenance purposes. In the mid-1960's these units were broken up, couplers replaced the drawbars, and the suffix letters were applied to the cab side and numberboards. All three units were traded to EMD as credit on a GP40 order in January 1968. The gentleman on the phone on the left side of the frame is calling the dispatcher. Although the switches are manually thrown, they are electronically locked. It was unusual for a train to cross over at Naperville, so there must have been a problem between Naperville and Downers Grove, where there were dispatcher-controlled crossover switches. This train will soon cross over from Track 3 (which he occupies in this photo) to Track 2, but will have to stop when the rear end clears the crossovers, so the rear brakeman can realign and lock the switches.

CB&Q F3 162
Title:  CB&Q F3 162
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F3 162 westbound at Naperville, Illinois on March 14, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The slow film of the day would not permit a sharp image in this lighting situation, but the train was stopped, and that gave me the opportunity to get my camera and get the shot. The signal that stopped this train was in the distance and some Engineer's could get their trains stopped before blocking Loomis Street, the only grade crossing in Naperville. The gates were down, but they would send out the head brakeman to flag the crossing and get automobile traffic around the gates and across safely.

CB&Q F3 162
Title:  CB&Q F3 162
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F3 162 eastbound at Aurora, Illinois on July 17, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Although three locomotives are seen, this was considered a single locomotive (or motor, as the CB&Q employees called them) , and were lettered with suffix letters in small one-inch letters below the word BURLINGTON on the side for maintenance purposes. During the 1960's the A-B-A F-3's were broken up, the drawbars were replaced with couplers, and the suffix letters were added to the numberboards. This unit could be either 162A (c/n 6506) or 162C (c/n 6507), both built in June 1948, both traded to EMD on an order of GP40's during January 1968.

CB&Q F3 162
Title:  CB&Q F3 162
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F3 162, eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on August 10, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built under EMD order E1007 in June 1948. It was delivered as a drawbar-connected A/B/A set. The individual units were given suffix letters, barely visible in one inch letters painted on the sides below the word BURLINGTON. Sometime after this photo, but before the end of the year, the drawbars were replaced with couplers, and suffix letters were applied to the sides and numberboards. The lead unit pictured could be either 162A or 162C.

Title:  CB&Q F3 162C
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F3 162C westbound Naperville, Illinois on December 18, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This is Second Train #11, the Nebraska Zephyr. In addition to Zephyr duties, Train #11 also carried the mail between Chicago and Lincoln, Nebraska. This second section is all mail storage cars. It is in charge of freight units, probably capable of keeping up with the stop and go schzdule of First #11. Locomotive 162C was built in June 1948 (c/n 6507) as the rear cab of motor 162 (CB&Q term for a set of coupled locomotives), and traded in for credit on an order for GP40's in January 1968.

Title:  CB&Q F3 163C
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F3 163C near Galva, Illinois on August 26, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This unit was delivered as number 137A, built in October 1948 (c/n 7010) on EMD Order E957A , the lead unit of the 137 A-B-B-A drawbar-connected F3 set. In the early 1950's, F3's 137 and 138 were broken up into A-B sets, renumbered, and mated ‰ith newly delivered F7 A's to produce F3-7 A-B-A sets 163 through 166. This locomotive was traded to EMD as credit on an order of SD45's in February 1969.

CB&Q F3 164C
Title:  CB&Q F3 164C
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F3 164C at Clyde, Illinois on October 31, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Delivered October 1948 as the rear cab of semi-permanently coupled F3 A/B/B/A set 137, for maintenence purposes it was numbered 137D, but only 137 was displayed in the numberboard. In May 1950 the CB&Q acquired 10 F7 A's, and broke the 137 (and 138) sets into A/B F3's and mated them with the new F7 cabs, producing four three-unit motors (CB&Q term for coupled locomotives) 163 - 166. Again, the suffix letter was not displayed in the numberboard until the 1960's when the motors were broken up into individual units, couplers were installed at both ends, and the suffix letter was painted on the nose and applied to the numberboard.

CB&Q 165ABC in 1964
Title:  CB&Q 165ABC in 1964
Description:  Early F units usually came in set of 4, i.e., ABBA. The CB&Q found that for most trains on its mostly flat railroad ABA sets were sufficient so the ABBAs were broken into ABs with another newer A added. On the CB&Q an ABBA set was lettered ABCD and an ABA set was lettered ABC. In this picture we see CB&Q 165A, an F7A and 165B and C, F3Bs. The train is the early morning "Pick Up" at Milledgeville, IL (122 miles from Chicago on the Twin Cities Line). If the train had a number, it was never used on the dispatcher's line. Yes it is a heck of a train to be doing local switching, but it did weekdays.

CB&Q F3 165C
Title:  CB&Q F3 165C
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F3 165C eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on February 27, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was delivered in October 1948 to the CB&Q as 138A (c/n 7012) on EMD Order E957A, the lead unit of a four unit F3 set 138. The motive power people decided they would prefer a 4500 horsepower locomotive, so they split the 138 four unit set in half, and added a new F7 cab unit to each A-B F3 set, and renumbered this particular set as 165. Although the suffix letters were not displayed in the numberboards until couplers were substituted for the drawbars between the units in the 1960's, the suffixes were displayed in very small 1 inch lettering on the side below the word BURLINGTON. Shortly after this photo date, the C suffix was applied to the F3 cab side and numberboard, and the A suffix was applied to the F7 cab. Two ABBA F3 sets were broken up this way (137 - 138), and four F7 cabs were added, producing ABA locomotives 163 - 166.

CB&Q F3 165C
Title:  CB&Q F3 165C
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F3 165C westbound at Eola, Illinois on February 13, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in October 1948 (c/n 7012) on EMD Order E957A as 138(A), traded for new power in February 1969, it was delivered as the lead cab of F3 A-B-B-A locomotive 138. Although it was numbered 138, a suffix letter was assigned and applied is small one-inch letters below the word BURLINGTON on the sides for maintenence purposes. The suffix letter was never displayed in the numberboards or on the nose or sides below the cab. When EMD announced the F7 model in 1950, the CB&Q purchased 10 F7A's and three F7B's. Three sets of pure F7 A-B-A locomotives were assembled (167-169), and the the remaining four F7A's were mated with F3A-B sets from locomotives 137 and 138, creating locomotives 163-166. Again, suffix letters were applied only in one-inch letters on the sides, the 163-166 F7A-F3B-F3A sets being considered as a single locomotive, and were semi-permanently coupled. The F7's were assigned the suffix "A" and the F3 cabs were assigned suffix "C". During the 1960's the 163-166 locomotives began receiving couplers in place of drawbars, and the suffix letters were applied to the numberboards and painted on the nose and sides. This particular locomotive received the suffix treatment sometime between March 1965 and February 1966, based on my photographic evidence. Cut in behind the F's is a new SSW SW1200 #2290 being delivered to the Cotton Belt, likely picked up in Congress Park.

This locomotive was built in October 1947 as CGW F3 101C (c/n 4118) on EMD Order E762, acquired by the C&NW in the 1968 merger, was renumbered to (3rd) 201 in 1971. It is listed at utahrails.net as retired in June 1985, traded to EMD and scrapped by Saint Louis Auto Shredding. The actual retirement date may have been earlier, judging by the trash bags covering the exhaust stacks and what appears to be missing batteries.

MONON F3 203
Title:  MONON F3 203
Description:  Monon F3 203 at Pullman Junction on the south side of Chicago, Illinois on April 20, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Officially the CI&L (Chicago Indianapolis & Louisville), Monon F3 203 was delivered as CI&L 82A, completed in May 1947 (c/n 4455). It is a bit unusual in that it has three portholes and Farr Aire grills. One of the spotting features of a Phase I F3 is three portholes on the A units, but it certainly was not delivered with Farr Aire grills, so one assumes this was a railroad modification.

It is pictured in charge of the daily Train Number 6, 'The Thoroughbred', running between Chicago and Louisville, Kentucky. It is seen here at Pullman Junction, and if it is on schedule, it's a little after noon. It departed Louisville at 6:30 AM, and is due in at Dearborn Street Station at 1:05 PM. According to the June 1965 Official Guide, 'Monon Passenger Trains Are Completely Air-Conditioned", and feature Reclining Seat Coaches; sandwiches, coffee, and soft drinks served between Bloomington and Chicago'. The southbound train of the same name was Number 5, departing Chicago at 5:25 PM, arriving at Louisville at 2:10 AM, a 324 mile run. This paint scheme was called the 'Purdue' paint scheme, the same colors of the Purdue University football team.
