The unit originally had white SP initials on the hood and nose, but they were later changed to yellow. The striping on the sides of the nose and the red/black color break on the hood were also different than the other units in this scheme. This engine began life as SP SD45 8985.

Only a few months prior it appeared all this trackage would part of one big railroad (SPSF) but it was not to be.
