FSF. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by David R. Sweetland that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in September of 1959. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5847 and two more "EP" Class units whose road numbers are not recorded. All were built by GM-EMD. #5847 is an EP-20 built during August of 1947, rated at 2,000 horsepower, and retired in June of 1964 after just 17 years of revenue service. They are about to pass under the 4th Street Footbridge with a passenger train, and will soon stop at the Altoona Station on their way to Pittsburgh and points West.

Shown here (R to L) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5848 and a "B" unit whose number is not recorded. Both are EP-20's built by GM-EMD and rated at 2,000 horsepower each. #5848 was built during August of 1947. They are pulling a passenger train down the Allegheny Mountains and around the Curve on their way to Altoona, Harrisburg, and points East. The date is an approximation.

Description:
Brickyard. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train at the Brickyard Crossing in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 18 July 1965. Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #5703, #5862-B, and #5848. All were built by EMD. #5703 is an EP-22 built in 1952 and rated at 2,250 horsepower. #5862-B and #5848 are EP-20's and rated at 2,000 horsepower each; #5862-B was built in 1948, but #5848 was built in 1947. They are pulling an 18-car eastbound passenger train and will soon stop at the Passenger Station in Altoona. At that point, not only will passengers exit and board the train, but both engine and train crews will change.

All were built by EMD. #5850 and #5849 are EP-20's built in 1947 and rated at 2,000 horsepower each. #5803 is an EP-22 built in 1952 and rated at 2,500 horsepower. They are about to pass under the 24th Street Bridge and will shortly stop at the Altoona Passenger Station for a crew change with a 27-car mail/express train. The famous Brick Plant is visible in the right center of the photo.

PRR E7 5849 at about 47th Street in Chicago, Illinois on May 9, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The E7 was built August 30, 1947 (c/n 3985) on EMD Order E745, became PRR 4209 and later PC 4209. Based on my fading memory, this is between 4:00 PM and 5:00 PM, so this could be either Train #48, The General, due out of Union Station at 4:15 PM, or it might be Train #28, The Broadway Limited, due out at 5:00 PM.

All were built by GM-EMD. #8506 is an ES-15M built in August of 1952 and rated at 1,500 horsepower. #5857 is an EP-20 built in February of 1948 and rated at 2,000 horsepower. They have just passed under the 24th Street Bridge with a passenger train on their way up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Pittsburgh and points West.

Here is the front portion of the wrap-around color cover of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company's 108th Annual Report for the Year Ending 31 December 1954. The photographer is not identified. Partial Cover Caption: "To celebrate the 100th Anniversary year of the opening of the Horseshoe Curve and the 75th Anniversary of the incandescent lamp, engineers of Sylvania Electric Products arranged to take a flashlight picture of the Curve as freight and passenger trains rounded it the night of October 20, 1954. The project to illuminate over 2,000,000 square feet required months of meticulous planning, 31 miles of wiring, and more than 6,000 large photoflash bulbs. With a burst of skyrockets lending color to the scene, cameras atop a 150-foot tower recorded the historic flash ~ the largest night photograph ever taken."
