They have pulled a mixed-cargo freight train down the New Portage Branch via the Muleshoe Curve, and are about to cross US Route 22 on their way into Altoona where they will merge with the mainline at ALTO Tower and proceed to the Eastbound Classification Yards.

Description:  Illinois Central (Gulf) 8903 was one of 14 IC GP7 units built for passenger service in 1952-53. By the time this photo was taken at North Baton Rouge Yard its stem generator and water tanks has been removed, but it still had its hood-mounted air reservoirs. The locomotive was rebuilt as ICG GP10 7918 the year after this photo was taken, and it was sold to the Arkansas Midland in January 1992.
