Description:
WB. Here is an image of an official photo that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 17 October 1936. Shown here in the Pennsylvania Railroad's Juniata Shops complex is engine #3536, an H-9S built here in October of 1913 and retired in September of 1955 after 42 years of service. While suspended by a pair of gantry cranes, it's being lowered into a vat of lye. The lye will dissolve accumulated grease and other gunk, making it easier to perform periodic maintenance. William E. As the dispatcher in the station and fellow trainman watch, this H class Consolidation gets underway with a blast of smoke from its stack. Built by the PRR Altoona shops as an H8a class with the original number of 1831 in 2/1908, it was later rebuilt in 12/1915 as an H10s. Unfortunately no location, date, or photographer was listed on the back of the photo.
