CB&Q GP7 244 |
Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP7 244 switching at Naperville, Illinois on April 7, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in November 1952 (c/n 14708) on EMD Order 5148, it became BN 1600 and was retired in September 1983. It is seen as the power for the East End Way Freight (to the Dispatcher, this is Extra 244 East) switching the industries in Naperville. The locomotive is equipped with a steam generator, and has a box on the running board ahead of the engineer's front window, which I believe is for Automatic Train Control equipment. A similiar box appears on the top of the boiler on steam locomotive 4960. Here is an expanation from Karl Rethwisch, retired CB&Q Engineer: Chuck, to my knowledge the 243 and 244 were the only Q Geeps fitted with Automatic Cab Signal equipment. They would, occasionally, show up on the Galesburg Local passenger job. I know of no reasons why these two engines were so equipped. |

Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP7 251 and the crew of the East End Way Freight at Naperville, Illinois on June 7, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The only name I know for sure is the Conductor, Mr. John Sylogye, the gentleman with the hat and pipe. However, Bob Campbell adds: Chuck - the brakeman in the black shirt is Jim Eddy; don't know the guy on the footboard. The Engineer is definitely NOT old Fred Huntley (the regular Engineer on this train). |

CB&Q GP7 251 |
Description: |
CB&Q GP7 251 pictured in the lower coach yard at Aurora, Illinois, June 20, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. It is seen here in charge of the consist for a steam fantrip The trip began in West Chicago, and was pulled down the branch line through Batavia to Aurora, where the 251 was cut off and steam locomotive 4960 (a 2-8-2) took over for a trip to Ottawa, Illinois and return. The trip was advertised gs a Fathers Day Outing, and the price was $6.00. The Geep was used on the Batavia Branch because 4960 was too heavy for the brfnch line rails. The Batavia Branch was significŸnt because it was the original railroad that became the CB&Q, chartered as the Aurora Branch Railroad. Some but not all of the CB&Q GP7's were equipped with steam generaJors, and the 251 is so equipped. However, it is not active in this photo, and was certainly not needed in June. The CB&Q had large steel caps fabricated to cover the steam generator's intake and exhaust vents, and they are in place on jhis locomotive. The purpose of the caps was to keep the rain out and prevent rust. This locomotive was built in November 1952 (c/n 16712), became BN 1607, and was retired in Novem_er 1981. |

Built December 1953 (c/n 18983) it was the last GP7 delivered to the CB&Q. It is equipped with a steam generator. It became BN 1623, and was retired September 1983. All of CB&Q's GP7's and GP's were delivered in this black paint scheme, termed "Blackbirds" by CB&Q employees. In 1959, the red "Redbirds" paint scheme was introduced on C&S SD9 #828, returned to EMD for wreck repairs, and repainted in red. The first new power to wear the red scheme were the SD24's, delivered in 1959. |

MP Meet |
Description: |
Shortly before they were discontinued on 11 March 1965, the Missouri Pacific’s eastbound (on the left) and westbound ORLEANEANS met at Eunice, Louisiana. These were the day trains between New Orleans and Houston, and should have met at Elton, 20 miles west of here; so the westbound train was running about 45 minutes late. By this time there was no longer any food service available on these trains, but passengers could order box lunches from the conductor. The track in the foreground was the Rock Island’s line from Eunice to Alexandria, and was its connection with the Southern Pacific off to the right. Up until 1943 Eunice was also served by a branch of the Texas & Pacific. (approximate date of photo) |
