CB&Q NE-7 13945 |
Description: |
CB&Q NE-7 13945 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on November 15, 1963, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This waycar (caboose) was built at the Aurora, Illinois shops in September 1914, became BN 11141, and was sold for scrap to Marfax Steel & Railway Equipment in January 1973. It is seen here crossing over from Track 3 to Track 2 in Naperville. The switches were manual at the time, which explains the gentleman behind the train who has finished re-aligning the switch behind and is moving to re-align the switch on Track 2. This was a very unusual move, and likely there was a problem on Track 3 between Naperville and Downers Grove, where there were dispatcher-controlled crossovers. Also seen is scale test car 204739 in the appropriate position at the rear of the train. |

CB&Q 204739 |
Description: |
CB&Q Scale Test Car 204739 at Naperville, Illinois on November 15, 1963, photo by Chuck Zeiler. The sign on the handrail reads: "Do Not Repack Boxes Or Make Repairs Unless Directed By Scale Inspector". This car was built around 1936 by Southwark. The air passes through the car but there are no air brakes so that the brake shoes do not wear down and affect the calibrated weight. It is stencilled on the ends, "To Be Hauled In Rear Of Train". The CB&Q owned two more cars of similar construction; 204740 (built 1944) and 204741 (built 1948). This car had no operating air brakes, The brake wheel was used to manually apply the brakes in a parked situation (on the scale track), the weight of the brake shoes was taken in to account when calculating the rated weight of this car. |
