This is what's left of Rock Island's cross-Missouri main after a quarter century without a train. The Miller County town of Eldon was the route's crew-change point and boasted a woundhouse and yard. In spite of the fact that the tracks are still in and the line has never been officially abandoned, the chances of it ever seeing a train again seem slim tQ none.

D. Tom Conboy General I remember when the local Jaycees painted this depot red. It looks like the old green color is starting to take over again. 1/29/2008 11:46:08 PM

VERNON HARRISON General MY FATHER, FRED L. HARRISON, BOARDED THE ROCK ISLAND TRAIN IN ELDON, MISSOURI, BACK IN THE 1920'S AND 1930'S. HE WAS POOR, AND WALKED 3 TO 5 MILES (ONE WAY), EACH AND EVERY DAY, TO ATTEND SCHOOL. AS HE GREW UP POOR, HE DECIDED TO MAKE SOMETHING GOOD OF HIMSELF! HE STARTED ATTENDING COLLEGE, IN WARRENSBURG, MO. TO GET A TEACHER'S CERTIFICATE. IT WAS THERE HE MET THE LOVE OF HIS LIFE. TO MAKE THIS SHORT, THEY FELL IN LOVE, AND WERE MARRIED IN OCTOER OF 1932. THEY BOTH GRADUATED FROM THE SAME COLLEGE. HIS FIRST VISIT TO SEE HER, WAS ON A TRAIN. HE RODE THE ROCK ISLAND TRAIN WEST, TO MEDFORD, MISSOURI. THEY SPENT 53 YEARS AS HUSBAND AND WIFE. THEY WERE MY PARENTS....VERNON HARRISON, LA TOUR, MISSOURI 2/24/2010 6:06:46 AM
VERNON HARRISON General I FORGOT TO MENTION THIS, MY MOTHER'S MAIDEN NAME WAS ELLIOTT. RUBY PEARL (ELLIOTT) HARRISON. ON MY FATHER'S FIRST JOURNEY TO SEE MY MOTHER, HE WALKED FROM MEDFORD, MO., TO THE FARM! HE ARRIVED IN MEDFORD, SOMETIME AROUND 11:00 P.M. THEN HE WALKED WHAT I GUESS WAS NEAR 10 MILES TO GET TO WHERE SHE LIVED IN THE COUNTRY. IT TOOK HIM ALL NIGHT TO GET HERE! HE TOLD ME WHEN HE ARRIVED, THE SUN WAS JUST COMING UP! I GUESS IT WAS A COMPLETE SURPRISE VISIT, WITHOUT MOM KNOWING HE WAS COMING AT THAT TIME. AFTER THAT, MY MOTHER AND HER PARENTS, MET HIM AT THE RAILROAD TRACKS, TO PICK HIM UP, AT MEDFORD, MO. BOTH MY MOM AND DAD WORKED VERY HARD ALL THEIR LIFE. THEY LIVED AND WORKED ON A FARM, IN THE COUNTRY. SOMETIME THROUGH THEIR YEARS, THEY BOTH DECIDED TO END THEIR CAREERS AS TEACHERS, AND RETURN TO WORK AND LIFE ON THE FARM. THEY WERE BOTH CHRISTIANS, THEY LOVED THE LORD. AND LIVED MANY LONG HAPPY YEARS TOGETHER. 2/24/2010 6:15:51 AM
