SSW F7 969
SSW F7 969 at Eola, Illinois on January 1, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in September 1952 ( c/n 17424 ) on EMD Order 6440. It is seen here in an eastbound ( see comments below ) CB&Q freight at Eola. Although the locomotive appears to be MUed to the CB&Q power, it was traded to EMD in January 1966.

Jim Satterwhite General I heard that there were still "F" roaming the system in 1966 but never saw them in and around Greenville, TX. 7/4/2009 10:04:11 PM
Mike Woodruff General Nice, two of my favorite paint schemes in one shot -thanks for sharing the pic. The SP/SSW roster in X2200S #55 listed the disposition for SSW 969 as retired/traded in to EMD on a GP40 1-3/66 (I'm assuming 1/66 for the retirement date and 3/66 for the trade-in date, but we know what happens when one "assumes" things!) 11/30/2010 12:12:04 PM
Ed Cooper General Cotton Belt Locomotives states this unit was sold to EMD in January 1966. Cotton Belt sold seven F7s to EMD between January and March 1966. 5/24/2015 7:57:45 AM
Ed Cooper General The train is eastbound and the 969 is going in to EMD on its last ride. Track orientation through Eola is east-west. The sun is always south in the northern hemisphere, especially in January. This photo is well lit so the sun is behind the photographer. 7/18/2015 12:09:43 PM
Ed Cooper General It also appears that this unit has a blown engine as evidenced by the oil on the side. It is 13 years old and not fully depreciated. 7/18/2015 12:13:05 PM
Chuck Zeiler General Thanks for the corrections Ed. I've adjusted the description above to reflect your observations. 1/7/2018 4:58:03 PM
