PRR 8650, AS-18M, c. 1964
Kreamer. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by R. von dem Hagen that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1964. Shown here (L to R) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #8650 and two more units whose road numbers are not recorded. $8650 is an AS-18M built by the American Locomotive Company in December of 1957 and rated at 1,800 horsepower. In this context, they're rounding the Curve with a fully-loaded mineral train on its way down the Allegheny Mountains to the Eastbound Receiving Yard in Altoona. The young man exclaims, "I love the smell of brake shoe smoke in the morning!" (#6 of 9)
