Here is an original photo by Douglas C. Jones that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1953. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6168, a J-1 (2-10-4) "Texas" built in Juniata during September of 1944 and retired in October of 1957 after just 13 years of revenue service. In this context, it's pulling a mixed-cargo freight train out of the Altoona Yards and up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. Note the Baldwin-built "Shark" on the adjoining track. |
