CR GP9 7391 Editors Pick!
Conrail GP9's 7391 and 7392, and E8 4327 (DIT) heading southeast near Crown Point, Indiana on an unknown day in June 1982, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 7391 was built in March 1956 as NYC GP9 5991 (c/n 21004) on EMD Order 5447, was renumbered to NYC 7391, then PC 7391, then CR 7391, later traded to EMD.

I was driving south on I-65 and happened to see headlights approaching from the west. I jumped off the Interstate, but by then this train had already passed me. I had to take some liberties with the local speed zones to get this photo, and even then the best I could do was get ahead a short distance, pull over and stick the camera out the window. The hogger was working his engines. A visit to Google Earth today shows that these rails have since been removed. * NOTE * Mark E left a Comment asking if I was sure this was shot in 1984. I went back and looked at the slide mounts (there are three slides in this sequence), and they are all stamped June 1982 and sequentially numbered. According to crcyc.railfan.net the E8's were all retired in January 1978, so I'll admit there is some question about the validity of the date. I do have a couple of slides of a CR E8 in Chicago commuter service dated July 1978. I was on a business trip and these are slides from my employer's camera, so they are not as carefully marked as they should be. The slide date stamp is all I can go by at this point.

Mark E General Are you sure this was 1984? 9/19/2010 1:36:13 AM
Chuck Zeiler General No, I'm not sure. After seeing your Comment, I went back and looked at the slide mounts, which are stamped June 1982. I'll change the dates in the Description. Unfortunately these were shot on a business trip and I did not mark the slides like I usually do. 9/19/2010 10:08:15 AM
Mark E General There is a possility the E-unit may have been on it's way to a scrapper or to NJT for commuter service out east. BTW, were the block signals turned sideways on this line? Conrail diactivated the signals in 1981. 9/19/2010 6:34:34 PM
Chuck Zeiler General Hi Mark, I do not recall seeing any block signals. Of course, I wasn't looking as much at the railroad as I was looking for officers of the law. In order for me to overtake this train, my speed needed to be greater than that of the train, which was moving at a good clip. I have one more photo in this sequence that I will scan and put up in the near future. I didn't scan it because there is a traffic sign in front of the lead locomotive, but what the heck. After the train passed, I was back on the Interstate and out of town, just in case my reckless driving had been noticed by the locals. 9/20/2010 10:08:03 AM
