Robert Hammons General Ok Fred, this happened before I was born so what went wrong? 3/15/2011 6:05:45 PM
Fred Goff General Well Robert, I think the switch at Bemco was open & the train went in the spur. Wish someone would give us more info. 3/17/2011 6:50:33 PM
Chris Balducci General I lived in Shelby when this derailment happened, but I first heard about it afterwards. The spur in question went to "Demco", an agricultural supply company owned by the Denton family. God bless. 4/10/2011 3:05:22 PM
Fred Goff General Thanks Chris. 4/10/2011 5:15:05 PM
Chris Balducci General The guardrail seen at the right was for a bridge on Old Highway 61. You could call it "Very Old Highway 61" since a new four-lane section bypassed Shelby about 2004-5. 9/10/2013 11:42:50 AM
Fred Goff General Thanks for the info, Chris. My wife & I were over there last year at the same spot. You could still see the road bed, but the trees & vines have taken over now. It doesn't look like the wreck ever occured or trains even ran through here. 9/12/2013 7:33:52 PM
