ARR 1070
Alaska Railroad caboose 1070 at Kansas City, Missouri on an unknown day in April 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This car was built by Pacific Car and Foundry Co. in March 1948 and placed in service April 1949. Those COTS stickers sure are annoying. Here's a quote from the book, Show Me Katy, by Michael A. Landis, referring to ARR 1070: Alaska Railroad caboose 1070 was a long way from home as she brings up the rear of a southbound freight on the main line through Mokane. The colorful crummy was one of three Katy leased from Alaska in the early 1980's to alleviate a shortage brought on by an increase in rail traffic. Being that the Alaska Railroad is isolated from the rest of the North American system, the cars had to be delivered via barge to Seattle.

L P General I remeber seeing it several times either on the joint Frisco/Katy line coming from the southwest when I lived in Lenexa, KS or in the Katy or Frisco yards off of Southwest Blvd in KC. At the time it was kind of ironic since there was so little run through power like there is today, and the one the train I saw both the power and caboose wasn't Frisco or Katy either, so I did not know what railroad had it. I think it was published in either Trains or another railfan magazine what railroad had it and I want to say the Katy...but I have slept since then and forgot. 11/19/2013 11:27:56 AM
Gary Everhart General Interesting to find an Alaskan crummy down in the "lower" lower 48 states! 11/20/2013 8:52:02 AM
