Caught with its steam up and tender loaded in the CNJ Communipaw yard, this 1900 Alco-Brooks built 4-8-0 camelback is an example of the largest camelback that Central RR of New Jersey had on its roster. Specs - K-1 class, 55" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 20x32" cylinders, engine weight of 201,000 lb, tractive effort of 43,619 lb. Renumbered from 453 to 468 in 1903. Rebuilt and superheated by the CNJ shops in April 1921. More than half were retired before WWII with the last of the class scrapped in 1948 (#465). Robert P. Morris photo |
