| Horseshoe Curve-1948. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Fred McLeod that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in the Summer of 1948. Shown here is a Pennsylvania Railroad L-1S (2-8-2) "Mikado" helping a T-1 (4-4-4-4) "Duplex" pull the eleven-car "Metropolitan," as a lone "helper" locomotive exits the Curve on its way back to Altoona for yet another run up the Allegheny Mountains. Partially visible at the right are two of Altoona's reservoirs. This photo comes from a color slide set entitled "Pennsy Steam Locomotives" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa (109-5). |
