PRR Passenger Station Wreck, #2 of 2, 1899
iStation. Here is the second of two images of photos by unidentified photographers that were taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 21 December 1899. Shown here is the carnage of a Pennsylvania Railroad freight train that derailed near the Passenger Station. The train lost its brakes while descending the East Slope of the Allegheny Mountains, jumped the tracks near 14th Street, and demolished another freight on an adjacent track. Several PRR men died in the process. Partially visible at the right is the Passenger Station's trainshed. Photo taken from the 12th Street Footbridge. William E. Burket Collection.
