South to The Springs
Title:  South to The Springs
Description:  Steaming south near Palmer Lake, CB&Q 5626 rolls an excursion trip to Colorado Springs from Denver. The 1940 built 4-8-4 puts on a fine show. Note one of CB&Q's two homebuilt Dome Coaches three cars back.

Layover at The Springs
Title:  Layover at The Springs
Description:  Having arrived at Colorado Springs, the 5626 excursion sits at the D&RGW depot. The consist is a mixed bag of mostly heavyweight equipment, with one of the Q's homebuilt Dome Coaches and what looks like Intermountain NRHS' ex-Santa Fe Obs. "Navajo" providing some lightweight flavor.

CB&Q 4-8-4 Class O-5-B 5626
Title:  CB&Q 4-8-4 Class O-5-B 5626
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-8-4 Class O-5-B 5626, date, location, and photographer unknown ( My guess is June 10, 1959 at Fort Collins, Colorado), print by Tom Klinger, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 5626 was assembled by the CB&Q at West Burlington, Iowa, completed in April 1940, sold for scrap in November 1960. This locomotive was used on a few fan trips, and on one such trip in June 1959 powered an Illini Railroad Club 'Journey To Yesterday' fan trip. On the return trip to Chicago just a little bit east of Denver, CO, one of its eccentric rods broke at speed disabling the locomotive. Since the Burlington was no longer making heavy repairs to steam power by that date, 5626 was condemned and sold for scrap. I posted an inquiry on the CB&Q Yahoo Group and got this reply from Hol Wagner:

You guessed well; it is indeed at Fort Collins on June 10, 1959, on the 'private' trip Howard Fogg ran from Denver to Fort Collins and return for invited guests. The man in the white cap up on the tender is C&S road foreman of engines R.E. 'Mickey' Hansen, who generally ran the engine on every fantrip over the C&S. He can be seen in the cab of the photo I posted a couple of weeks ago taken on this same trip at Church's Lake and showing the engine's Chinese red cab roof.
