PRR 9838, EFP-15, c. 1955
Title:  PRR 9838, EFP-15, c. 1955
Description:  Altoona Action. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide by an unidentified photographer that was taken at the Passenger Station in Altoona, Pennsylvania, perhaps during 1955. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #9838 (in Brunswick Green) and a "B" unit (in five-stripe Tuscan Red) whose road number is not recorded. Both were built by GM-EMD. #9838 is an EFP-15 built in 1952 and rated at 1,500 horsepower. Note that the fresh train crew is waiting for a front-end helper unit to couple on, and then they will proceed up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Johnstown, Pittsburgh, and points West. Dominating the background are portions of the PRR's 12st Car Shops. The exact date is not recorded.

PRR 9838, EF-15A, 1965
Title:  PRR 9838, EF-15A, 1965
Description:  Winter. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 03 January 1965. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #9838, #9844-B, and #9834. All are EFP-15's built by EMD in 1952 and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. They are pulling an 83-car train under the 4th Street Bridge, and are about to begin climbing the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West. Bringing-up the rear are "pushers" #8667, #8666, and #8669. Visible on the left are a telephone box and a venerable black water tower, the last sign of the "Age of Steam" in this part of town.
