Title:
PRR 917, E-3SD, 1939
Description:
Here is a photo by an unidentified photographer that was taken at the Meadows Yard in Kearny, New Jersey, in May of 1939. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #917, an E-3SD#"Atlantic" built in Juniata as an E-3D during May of 1908, rebuilt as an E-3SD in September of 1912, and retired in August of 1939 after 31 years of faithful service. Title:
Pennsy power??
Description:
Doesnt look like it, but the type face on the number looks like it could be. We stopped near Mansfield for gas and a Mc Donalds tea off I 71, and saw this up on the hill behind the Mc Donalds, carrying a banner for the diner it was in front of. Any ideas on what the heritage of this engine is, please comment.

Close up view
Description:
A closer view of the steam engine behind the Mc Donalds in Mansfield. The RRPA system identifies the Pennsy engine with this number as a 4-4-2, but I can clearly see there are at least six driving wheels, and it may be a 2-8-0. I suspect the number may not be the engine's actual number, or it's not a PRR engine, which I suspect is the case. The fall color in the background is absolutely authentic!!
