AW. Here is an image of a photo by Arlington J. Wolfe that was taken just East of the 24th Street Bridge in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1948. Shown here (R to L) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #4371 and another locomotive whose road number is not recorded. #4371 is an I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapod" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an I-1S during January of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in March of 1943, and retired in December of 1957 after 34 years of faithful service. In this context, they're about to pass SLOPE Tower with a freight train on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. William E. Burket Collection. |
