Working on the railroad
Title:  Working on the railroad
Description:  C 420 223 has a work train under control as the construction continues for the electrification project that will bring better and faster service to central Long Island. LIRR had little freight equipment of its own, just some MOW cars, so had to use other roads cars for projects, such as the C&O gon behind the power. Opening day is only 15 months off.

Title:  Rural scene
Description:  Whod have figured this pastoral view for Long Island?? It was already a lot more built up by this time than when I was a kid in the 60s, but there were a few places scenes like this could still be seen. A pair of C 420s rolls RF 65 toward Huntington and Hicksville

Going back to the train
Title:  Going back to the train
Description:  RF 64 has run as far east as its going to on the Port Jeff branch today, and is now running around its train to start back as RF 65. That train more often got a pair of MP 15s, but occasionally would get a pair of Alcos. Im not complaining about the substitution.

Stone to Holtsville
Title:  Stone to Holtsville
Description:  RF 56, a weekend train that ran the Main Line, rolls through B Towers interlocking with 35 cars of stone for Prema Asphalt in Holtsville. They were a big seasonal customer on the LIRR, getting several trainloads of stone per week from a quarry in Connecticut via the P&W. The track in the foreground is the Central Branch, which runs to a connection with the Babylon Branch just west of the Babylon station. It is used by RF 64/65 and a host of commuter trains.

End of the line
Title:  End of the line
Description:  The remaining 8 C 420s that had been working in freight service on the LIRR sit outside the Morris Park shops after being pulled from service following the opening of the Ronkonkoma electrification. The retirement would be short, as several would return to service, including 225 and 229, which would be repainted in the 1960s era blue and yellow MTA scheme.

No more action
Title:  No more action
Description:  Or maybe there will be. A pair of C 420s rendered surplus sit behind the shop at Morris Park. At this point, their future looks dim, but the Centuries will rise again, and have an indian summer for a few years before finally going to scrap. Note the other equipment stashed with the Alcos-a cupola caboose, a box car, and a retire B 60 baggage car. I can recall seeing these on some east end trains in the 1960's.

RF 65
Title:  RF 65
Description:  RF 65 heads west toward Hicksville behind a pair of C 420s. When LIRR started building high level platforms at all its stations, it also built pedestrian overpasses, which opened up photo angles previously not available. Here, Im taking advantage of the the new overpass to get this panoramic view of Kings Park on the Port Jeff branch.
