Album Info:One of the more productive ways to get train photos, for me, anyway, is a chase. If I'm lucky, I'll get one going away from home, then catch something else coming back. Most of the time, it works best if I catch a northbound and follow it to either Noel or McElhany near Neosho, though chasing south to Stilwell and back is also a workable plan. Living in Siloam Springs, I can go either way. This album is the result of those chases.

Title:  Open
Description:  I caught a southbound sand train as I was passing through Westville, but did not get ahead of him til Baron. This shot was seriously treed in til a few months ago, and you could barely see the signal. Now you can see all the way past the grade crossing. Good for photos, good for the folks crossing the tracks there.

Title:  Havent done this one in a while
Description:  The shot on the curve at the far north end of Stilwell has become a challenge, due to the brush that has grown up along the tracks. Today it wasnt too bad, so I tried the shot. Those wings look good coming around the curve.

Lite power mix
Title:  Lite power mix
Description:  A light power move rolls north just south of Watts, with a good mix of power, including an international visitor. Also notable is the third unit, KCS 3997, one of the EMDX SD70ACe demonstrators; and KCS 4618, one of the few, but slowly growing number of AC44CW's that are being repainted into the Belle scheme.

Lite power going away
Title:  Lite power going away
Description:  Because the heavy trains tend to run south, more power winds up in Heavener than is needed for northbound trains. Thus, sometimes a lite power move is done to get all those DPUs back to Pittsburg for another push over the grades on the subdivision. This is one such move, seen going away as it approaches Watts.

And back again
Title:  And back again
Description:  Every once in a while, I get a bonus. Todays was this southbound grain train coming off the Illinois River into Watts. He met the lite power move at Gentry, so I had a bit of a wait, but worth it for the shot. This train would meet a northbound here.

Fizzled out
Title:  Fizzled out
Description:  The southbound grain train waits for the meet at the south end of Watts. The northbound train would not show til the light was gone. I was hoping for a nice, sunlit shot as he came around the curve just south of the siding, and at the newly opened view near MP 239, but it was not to be. Such is railfanning.

Pulling down for a meet
Title:  Pulling down for a meet
Description:  Though theres already one going on here. I had seen the southbound grain train after I had dropped off recycling in Siloam, and decided to take chase. I caught up to him here in Watts, where he was holding the main for an impending northbound, but also because the dodger, L 102, was working the yard, using the siding for head room.

Coop-erating
Title:  Coop-erating
Description:  Southbound grain train slowly passes the Farmers Coop at the north end of Stilwell. Theres a northbound empty coal train that has just cleared into the siding, and the grainer is just getting the signal at N Stilwell. The power is a pair of originally gray AC44CWs, freshly repainted into the Belle scheme. The GEs have been lagging in getting repainted, so it was good to see these in the new scheme.

Ride home
Title:  Ride home
Description:  As frequently happens on these little jaunts, I have a train to chase back north. Today it is an empty TXUX coal train, waiting at CP North Stilwell alongside US 59. The single unit up front is augmented by two more on the rear. Usually they will move all the power to the head end on the empty moves, since there is no need for a rear DPU. Occasionally, theyll leave the power as it came down, just cutting off the KCS helpers at Heavener, which is what happened today.

Meeting a northbound
Title:  Meeting a northbound
Description:  The grain train meets the empty TXUX train at CP North Stilwell. The single unit is uncommon on the head an empty train, though there are two more on the rear. Practice is for BNSF to send the coal trains from Wyoming in a 2x1 configuration, with KCS adding DPU power on the rear at Pittsburg. This train had the KCS power cut off at Heavener, but the BNSF power was not rearranged once the train was empty. The two KCS units on the grain train are fresh repaints. Thats US 59 in the foreground.

Northbound for a meet
Title:  Northbound for a meet
Description:  The southbound TXUX train I followed from Westville will meet this northbound empty AEPX train here. I was on my way down to the station to shoot the southbound and got this grab shot of the empty coal at the OK 51 crossing. Getting the meet while both trains were moving was going to be problematic, so I took the shot from the road.

On the crossing
Title:  On the crossing
Description:  I was at home working on some project or another when I heard a horn, which sounded like it was coming from a northbound. I got myself organized and out, thinking where I might shoot a northbound in the middle of the day with its unfavorable sun angle. I settled on Davidson Rd, since it gives a good side angle. Then I saw the train, an empty 124 car TXUX coal train, with six units up front. There was no way I was going to capture the whole power consist, never mind any train, so I went for the lights, in this case, crossing flashers, as the head end crossed over Davidson Rd.

Description:  A bit wider angle shows the full power consist and some of the train. When I crossed the tracks to set up this shot, I saw the signal just to the north flashing yellow, approach medium for the next signal in downtown Decatur, which would be displaying approach. That meant a meet at Dorsey, between Decatur and Gravette. I rolled the coal train by, and waited for the southbound.

Waiting
Title:  Waiting
Description:  I was headed out to Wal Mart this Sunday afternoon, when I looked over at Lake Frances Drive to see a train sitting short of the crossing. That usually means a meet, so I went over and shot the photo of the train waiting at the crossing.
