UP 4201
Title:  UP 4201
Description:  UP 4201 as the only unit out of several I was able to get onto the sensor - and not just because it would seem in Texas they have to put their locomotives in a fence in an effort to raise a herd of them, but because wed been stuck in traffic long enough in Corsicana to make me wonder if wed ever hit highway speed again, so once I found open road, I was a little afraid to slow down or stop.

Title:  UP 5737 - UP 6552
Description:  UP 5737 - UP 6552 with mixed freight coming off the Hearne-west crew change area just to the east of the Brazos River... just in case you wanted to see what it looks like to shoot through the rear window from the passenger seat (because while you happened to be passing the train, your Uncle, who never talks with his hands, decided *that* was the moment hed start - so every one of your pictures you shot across the cabin of the car out the drivers side window had his hand in it instead of a train).

UP 7514 - UP 7456
Title:  UP 7514 - UP 7456
Description:  UP 7514 - UP 7456 almost in the same place, but returning from dinner over in Hearne, yet another crew change pause and go... although if they arent hitting up the Dixie Cafe for fried catfish, not sure if they know what theyre missing. (Non-endorsed pronouncement: if youre ever near Hearne, the Dixie Cafe may not look like the jewel of the south, but if you dont stop in and get a mess of their fried catfish, you really are missing a true taste of the south.)

Gause: Road Sign Heaven
Title:  Gause: Road Sign Heaven
Description:  Gause: Road Sign Heaven - since Im hanging around waiting for the end of the train, I was actually snapping for a different reason (the Gause, Texas book... no, seriously... I do pretend to be an author sometimes) so lets play count the number of potential road signs to get in the way. I counted nineteen individual signs on poles, not counting the at-grade crossing gate, which wouldve made twenty or more. I hope you appreciate how most of the frames are throw-aways getting this gander down the road.

Title:  UP 1043
Description:  UP 1043 still paused at Hearne, off-duty or out-of-luck for anything to do (hopefully not a long-term prospect, although downtown Hearne is looking somewhat ill... but rumor has it the UP is planning a rather large yard expansion for Hearne off to the west... of course, this comes from the same family that brings you the bNSf merger updates, so take it as you will).

UP 6008
Title:  UP 6008
Description:  UP 6008 first of two at the front of an eastbound string of coal open hoppers... and "Why," you may ask, "did Bob take a picture of this clearly having passed him train, when hed been in position for five minutes before hand aiming westward for the approach?" Excellent question! Gause, while having few residents, has four road signs for every resident... which means out of six frames of the approaching train every one of them had one to three signs covering either the cab side panel and or the entire front of the engine. If youd like any pictures of the backs of road signs, though, please let me know - I have a ton of them from our time around Gause.

UP 7308
Title:  UP 7308
Description:  UP 7308 at the front of a triple-header ore train holding up just in front of an at-grade crossing... amazingly enough, the friendly nature of the local engineers and rail crews continue - he popped his ditch lights on, not just potentially for the photograph, but to sound the crossing bells for a brief burst, then shut down - they were getting ready to pull out and were offering to let us get through before the gates dropped - because hed be accelerating from a dead stop, it would take the consist a while to get across (he couldnt know we were trying to get caught behind the gates). I just found the friendly nature really refreshing... odd, but refreshing, considering how people around the rails are viewed with such suspicion, distrust, and unhappiness for the most part up north (sure, there are the handful of neat, happy to wave (yet again, for them, Im sure!) at someone watching the train, but for the most part, more joy about trains down South than in the Northwest.

UP 7882
Title:  UP 7882
Description:  UP 7882 in second position in a very slow moving eastbound double-stack... and something that keeps hitting me all over the south: the trains are allowed to run free, so the weeds you see between the photographer and the units? Thats it... no fences, no Rail Police shaking us down, yet were parked in a little dirt and gravel road siding somewhat near the tracks, possibly used by maintenance vehicles - but theres no "No Trespassing" signs, theres no dirty looks, and even the better half has commented how often we get a friendly toot and wave while weve been down south (although right now shes not riding shotgun, but my Uncle is grimacing while Im parking our car in what might normally be considered a 4x4 / higher clearance truck parking spot... something about balancing the car between the ruts to park - most of my family has gotten used to this, but it would seem this being his first morning to ride with me, he might be having second thoughts about sanity... of one or both of us)... but its nice to have reasonable access to watch the trains - it would seem, unlike the Pacific Northwest, they trust you to use common sense and stay out of the way of trains. That or they have fewer lawyers... now Im sort of wondering about the relatively well fed vultures around these parts...

UP 8756
Title:  UP 8756
Description:  UP 8756 pushing the double-stack along... and, yes, while we wondered into the local hardware store to look at hats (where else do _you_ find inexpensive cowboy hats?) we stepped out to the sound of moving trains... and the first drops of rain... which held off until I heard the pusher approaching and stepped out into the middle of the road to get the shot... then the sky opened up for a classic Southern Downpour that lasted less than two minutes... just long enough for me to get the shot (and soaked). (Which is sort of bad, because Im from the Pacific Northwest, people were looking at me like I was stupid standing out in the rain - yet, Im trained to ignore the rain or youd forever be stuck under an awning waiting for it to stop... and possibly miss pictures of trains.)
