Here are eight original photos that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad road locomotives pulling trains out of the yards in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania. The first seven were taken during the Summer of 1960, while the last was taken in April of 1962. The purpose of the PRR's Samuel Rea Shop was to build or rebuild railroad cars of various sorts. When those cars were finished, they were marshaled into trains departing from the Hollidaysburg Yards. Trains destined for parts East would turn right at WYE Tower, merge with the main line at ALTO Tower in Altoona, and proceed from there. Trains destined for parts West would pass by WYE Tower, climb the Allegheny Mountains via the Muleshoe Curve, merge with the main line just before the tunnels at Gallitzin, and proceed from there; there would often be several pushers on the rear. Also included are original 35mm color slides by three other photographers.

Both are EH-15's built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #9547 was built in 1948, but #9693 was built in 1949. This crew is just about ready to back the engines up and couple onto the train they'll pull out of the Yard. This photo was taken near the Yard Master's Office at the eastern end of South Juniata Street. Visible in the distance is the PRR's Samuel Rea Shop.

Both are EH-15's built by EMD rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #9547 was built in 1948, but #9693 was built in 1949. This photo was taken at the Bedford Street Crossing, next to the Passenger Station. From here, this train will pass WYE Tower, climb the Allegheny Mountains using the New Portage Branch Line, and merge eventually with the mainline at Gallitzin.

Road Power. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad road locomotives in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, on 22 August 1960. Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #9468 and #9469. Both are FF-20's built by Fairbanks-Morse in 1948 and rated at 2,000 horsepower each. This photo reveals just how the process worked. The locomotives and one caboose would have been driven forward from East Altoona to the Wye Switches, turned about, and then run backwards from there to the Hollidaysburg Yards. This crew has just uncoupled from N-5 caboose #477020, which will be pulled to the far end of the Yard and coupled to the out-bound train by engine #9394 ~ an ES-12 switcher built by EMD in 1950. After the caboose is out of the way, this crew will back their FF-20 locomotives a bit further into the Yard and couple onto the train they'll pull out of Hollidaysburg up the New Portage Branch Line to Gallitzin and points West. This photo was taken just west of the intersection of Jones and South Juniata Streets. Visible in the distance is the PRR's Samuel Rea Shop.

The crew has just coupled onto a long string of new and rebuilt freight cars, and has begun pulling them out of the Yard. This photo was taken near the intersection of Jones and South Juniata Streets. From here, this train will pass the Hollidaysburg Station and WYE Tower, climb the Allegheny Mountains using the New Portage Branch, and merge eventually with the mainline at Gallitzin.

Road Power. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad road locomotives in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, on 02 September 1960. Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #9796 and #9772. Both are EF-15A's built by GM-EMD in 1951 and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. Along with an N-5 caboose, these locomotives are backing into the Hollidaysburg Yards. They would have been driven forward from East Altoona to the Wye Switches, turned about, and then run backwards from the Wye into Hollidaysburg where they would pick-up an outbound freight train. The PRR's Freight Station is visible at the left, and Hollidaysburg's historic Chimney Rocks can be seen in the far distance.

Both are EF-15A's built by EMD in 1951 and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. The crew has coupled onto a long string of new 70-ton hopper cars and have just passed the "HOLLY" bloc telephone. This photo was taken at the Bedford Street Crossing, next to the Passenger Station. From here, this train will pass WYE Tower, climb the Allegheny Mountains using the New Portage Branch Line, and merge eventually with the mainline at Gallitzin.

PRR 5899, EP-22, 1962
Description:
Road Power. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad road locomotives in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, on 08 April 1962. Shown here are PRR engines #5899, #5810, and #5761. All are EP-22's built by EMD and rated at 2,250 horsepower each. #5899 and #5810 were built in 1951, but #5761 was built in 1952. They are pulling a "Railfan Special to the Horseshoe Curve," sponsored by the Philadelphia Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society. The "Special" departed Philadelphia bright and early on a Sunday morning, following the PRR's mainline through Harrisburg to Huntingdon. There, it switched over to the Petersburg-Hollidaysburg Branch Line and followed the undulating Juniata River to Hollidaysburg ~ where the Railfans were treated to tours of the PRR's Samuel Rea Shop. After leaving Hollidaysburg, the "Special" passed WYE Tower and took the New Portage Branch Line via the Muleshoe Curve up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin. There, it passed through the westbound Allegheny Tunnel, navigated the wye at Gallitzin, and passed through the eastbound New Portage Tunnel on its way down the Alleghenies. At the Horseshoe Curve, the "Special" stopped to allow the Railfans to visit the PRR's K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" #1361 enshrined there. After all were safely back on board, the train continued down the Mountains toward Altoona and the return trip to Philadelphia ~ a round trip of over 500 happy miles at $11.50 per person! Visible in the distance (L to R) are the wooden water tower and a string of gondolas marshalled for reconditioning at the Shop. Photo taken from the Jones Street crossing and entryway.
