Louisville & Nashville GP9 553 was parked on one of the ready tracks at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal on 24 March 1961. The locomotive had come in from Pass Christian, Mississippi on commuter Train No. 9 and would return east (railroad north) on No. 12. The 553 was one of three L&N GP7’s (550-552) and two GP9’s (553, 554) that were equipped with both steam generators and train control equipment. These locomotives spent much of their early lives on the line between New Orleans and Mobile, and were frequently used on commuter train Nos. 9 and 12 up until these trains were discontinued on 6 May 1964. The 553 was renumbered 540 in 1965, and later became L&N 2410 and then Seaboard System 2410. |
