GM&O Train No. 2
Description:
The engineer of Gulf Mobile & Ohio train 2 – the northbound
REBEL
– can be seen in the cab of power car 353 as he awaited his 6 p.m. departure from the Southern Railway’s TERMINAL STATION in New Orleans. The photo is undated, but we know it was taken between 1940, when the GM&O was formed, and 1947, when the railroad adopted a red-and-maroon paint scheme, because the train was still wearing its original red-and-silver colors The 353 was built by American Car & Foundry in June 1935. Bisso Switchers
Description:
Former Texas Pacific-Missouri Pacific Terminal Railroad of New Orleans (TPMPT) 0-6-0 numbers 1 and 2 were photographed in September 1951 at their new home, the New Orleans Coal & Bisso Towboat Co. The locos had been built by Alco-Richmond in June 1907 (42928-42929) as Trinity & Brazos Valley 75 and 76, for use at Galveston; but following the T&BV’s bankruptcy in 1914, the railroad lost its access to Galveston from Fort Worth over the Santa Fe and the two switchers became redundant. The City of Houston bought the two locomotives via the Barry Equipment Co. in 1917 and they arrived on 31 March lettered Houston Municipal 1 and 2. They were leased to the International & Great Northern from March 1918 until October 1921, and were sold to Grant Locomotive and Car Works [of Houston] in1922. They subsequently moved to the TP-MPT where they retained their previous numbers. In early 1948 the TP-MPT received four Alco S2 diesels, and the 0-6-0’s were sold to Bisso by August 1949. Besides operating coal-burning towboats and ferries, Bisso also provided coal for other vessels and used its locos to move hopper cars from a 2-track yard along the New Orleans Public Belt then up the Mississippi River levee to its coal-handling facility along the river. Bisso’s coaling operation ended around 1955, and with it, the need for any locomotives. No. 1 disappeared, and was probably scrapped; but No. 2 remained on Bisso property until 2010, when it was donated to the Louisiana Railway Heritage Trust. (approximate date of photo)

L&N Station
Description:
For about 90 years the residents of Rabbit Island, Louisiana - 30 miles east of downtown New Orleans - had their own stop along the Louisville & Nashville Railroad. It was named
RIGOLETS
, after the nearby pass connecting Lake Pontchartrain and Lake Borgne. The structure shown here was built after the previous building burned in 1934, and it remained in use until August 1962. During its final years the only service here were commuter trains 9 and 12, which ran between New Orleans and Pass Christian, Mississippi. After this building closed, trains 9 and 12 continued to stop here until they made their last runs on 6 May 1964.

Pedestrian Overpass
Description:
For many years this pedestrian overpass allowed people using the Canal Street ferry to avoid six railroad tracks, owned by the Southern Pacific, Louisville & Nashville and New Orleans Public Belt. From 1902 until 1954 the L&N railroad station was in the open area on the left of the walkway and was used by up to 20 trains a day, many of which blocked Canal Street as they loaded or unloaded passengers. After L&N passenger trains relocated to the new Union Passenger Terminal in April 1954, the rail traffic here consisted of infrequent freight trains so the overpass fell out of use and was removed in the 1960’s. The building in the left background at No. 1 Canal Street belonged to the Alcoa Steamship Company.
