NKP 2-8-4 #759 - Nickel Plate Road |
Description: |
This beautiful profile of the Lima 2-8-4 Berkshire was caught while the locomotive headed up the "Golden Spike Limited" on its return trip back to Steamtown after visiting Promontory, Utah for the "Driving of the Golden Spike Ceremony" in 1969. After faithfully serving the Nickel Plate Road, the locomotive was mercifully sold for scrap to F. Nelson Blount on October 16, 1962 who preserved it at Steamtown National Historic Site now in Scranton, PA. No photographer was listed for this fine photo. |

NKP 2-8-4 #759 - Nickel Plate Road |
Description: |
This interesting photo was taken by an unknown photographer while Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 Berkshire #759 was heading up one of the fan excursions it led while operational at Steamtown National Historic Site. Definitely a more "modern" way of loading coal than a traditional coaling tower used to be and far more fans watching than used to at a coaling tower too.. Note the Western Maryland Alco S2 #126 which headed up the coaling train. It would be retired two years later. Note on the back of the photo states "NKP 759 on train AJ-1 and AJ-2 being loaded at Cumberland." No photographer was listed for this action photo. |
